Preparing For Your Plus Size At Disney World Trip

When we talk about Disney World for fat people or plus size, if you prefer that term (we’ll use both in this resource), it’s thrilling to know that Disney is known for its inclusivity!

Over the years, the theme park has earned a reputation for being “Pooh Size Friendly.” Yes, like Winnie-the-Pooh! Meaning that Disney welcomes guests of all sizes.

This welcoming approach has made Disney parks a popular destination, so be sure to also explore our Disneyland Guide for Plus Size Guests.

Within this comprehensive Disney World guide, you’ll learn size-friendly tips about the Magic Kingdom, Disney Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

Whether you’re a Disney newbie or a seasoned park-goer, we want to help ensure your visit is as enchanting as possible.

Preparing ahead of time is essential if you’re a plus size person planning a trip to Disney World. From finding comfortable outfits to navigating the parks’ rides and attractions if you have accessibility needs, there are several things to consider to make your trip as enjoyable as possible.

With some planning and preparation, you can have an unforgettable Disney World experience and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Plus Size Travel Considerations

You’re all set if you plan to drive in your own car. However, if you’re renting a car, make sure you comfortably fit before driving away.

Consider mentioning any concerns as you’re checking in. You might get an upgrade to a larger vehicle without getting up charged (but don’t hold us to that).

It’s worth speaking up and paying a bit more if the seat feels too snug. You don’t want to arrive at your dream vacation with bruises on your hips.

Flying to Disney World can be an exciting part of your trip. But for plus size individuals, it can also be a stressful experience.

We recommend Southwest because they have a Customer of Size Policy. Passengers who are unable to lower both armrests comfortably can request an additional seat at no extra cost.

If Southwest isn’t an option in your area, don’t stress. You can get plenty of helpful tips from the Facebook group Flying While Fat.

In the words of Winnie-the-Pooh, “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” So, never feel ashamed to request any accommodations you may need, including a seatbelt extender!

Disney World Wheelchair Accessibility for Plus Size Guests

Disney World is committed to providing all guests with an inclusive and magical experience. The park offers a range of accessibility options to ensure that everyone can enjoy the attractions, entertainment, and amenities.

For example, many rides and attractions are wheelchair accessible, with designated entrances and spacious ride vehicles that accommodate wheelchairs.

Disney World also provides accessible transportation throughout the park, including buses, boats, and monorails designed to accommodate wheelchairs and scooters.

The Services for Guests with Mobility Disabilities resource is extremely helpful. There’s contact information if any of your questions are left unanswered.

How To Get Size-Friendly Wheelchairs or Scooters at Disney World

You can bring your wheelchair or ECV throughout the Walt Disney World resort.

Disney World provides rentals via Guest Services. Please note that Disney World wheelchairs have a weight capacity of 350 pounds. Disney World ECVs have a weight capacity of 450 pounds.

You can rent wheelchairs, ECVs, and strollers from retailers close to the resort who will even deliver! Just be sure to do your research and read reviews.

Also, there’s the Disability Access Service (DAS) offered at Walt Disney World theme parks. This is for people who have a difficult time tolerating extended waits.

Disney World is dedicated to making the park accessible and enjoyable for all guests!

Plus Size Disney World Outfits

The perfect plus size Disney World outfit balances what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Before we share some comfy and fun examples, let’s quickly review some Disney World attire policies. You can’t wear clothing that drags on the ground, no masks, and costumes are a no-no for anyone over 14.

However, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and that’s where “Disney Bounding” comes in! Disney Bounding is like cosplay without the costume. Instead, you take inspiration from a Disney character and pull a fun outfit together. See our plus size Disney Bounding resource with lots of fun ideas!

Now remember, Disney reserves the right to deny admission or remove any person wearing clothes they deem inappropriate. So no shells for an Ariel costume, but you could totally rock a purple tank top and a teal skirt!

Focus on Comfort

Disney World is a place where you will be walking around a lot. So, it’s essential to prioritize comfort when planning your outfit. Wear comfortable, breathable clothes, and don’t restrict your movement. Opt for soft fabrics that won’t rub or chafe, and choose shoes you can walk in for hours without discomfort.

Embrace Your Style

Disney World is a place where everyone can express themselves! So embrace your unique style, and showcase your personality through your outfit. And here’s where Disney Bounding comes into play!

Layer Up

Florida weather can be unpredictable, so it’s essential to layer up. Bring a lightweight jacket or cardigan that you can easily remove if it gets too hot. Layering also allows you to create different looks by mixing and matching different pieces.

If you’re planning on going on water rides, bring a change of clothes or wear quick-drying fabrics. And thanks to humidity, quick-drying fabrics are a great idea in general.

Accessorize

Accessories are an excellent way to elevate any plus size Disney World outfit. Hello, adorable Minnie ears! A fun sunhat, statement necklace, or a bold pair of earrings can add that extra touch to your outfit and make it stand out.

One of the best accessories you can bring is a backpack! Be it something cute like the popular Loungefly Disney bags or your favorite bag from home, you’ll be thankful at least one person in your group has a backpack.

You may want to consider packing the following essentials in your backpack;

snacks

refillable water bottle

spare clothes (including extra socks)

sunscreen

deodorant

anti-chafe stick

bandaids for blisters

fan (personal misting fan or handheld fan – there are even cute Disney fans)

any necessary medication

tissues, handkerchief, or baby wipes (for sniffles or sweat)

extra clothes and items for your children

Shoes

Choosing the right shoes to wear at Disney World is crucial to having a comfortable and enjoyable experience. With all the walking and standing in line, wearing shoes that provide ample support and cushioning is essential.

Opt for shoes that are lightweight, breathable, and have good arch support. Sneakers are a great option as they provide both comfort and stability. And yes, you can still look absolutely adorable while rocking comfy shoes on your feet!

If you plan on going on water rides, bring quick-drying shoes to avoid walking around in wet socks or shoes.

Speaking of bringing an extra pair of shoes, that’s one tip many plus size Disney World guests recommend. Switching shoes halfway through your day can provide some needed relief for sore feet.

Remember, your feet will be your best friend during your Disney World trip. So take care of them by wearing comfortable and supportive shoes.

Tips to Help Avoid Chafing at Disney World

One issue park visitors of all sizes face is chafing. And chafing occurs when the skin rubs against clothing or skin repeatedly, causing irritation and discomfort.

You can do a few things to help reduce chafing at Disney World.

First, wear comfortable, breathable clothing that fits well. Are you planning to Disney Bound in a dress? We recommend wearing a pair of anti-chafing shorts, plus size bike shorts, or leggings under that adorable dress!

Consider applying a lubricating product, such as anti-chafing balm, to areas prone to chafing before you start your day. And we’ve already reviewed the best anti-chafing products for you!

Finally, take breaks throughout the day to rest and reapply any necessary products.

Staying Hydrated at Disney

While the cold never bothered Elsa, the Florida heat can take a toll on park guests. So, staying hydrated is critical when visiting Disney World, even during the cooler months!

With the vast expanse of the parks, walking and standing for extended periods in the heat can quickly lead to dehydration. Dehydration can cause fatigue, headaches, and dizziness, spoiling the Disney experience.

Moreover, the Florida heat and humidity can cause sweat to evaporate quickly, leading to unnoticed dehydration.

Try to be hydrated before beginning your magical day. Then drink plenty of water and rest when you’re feeling fatigued.

Thankfully, Disney World has numerous water fountains and beverage stations throughout the park, making it easy for visitors to refill their water bottles. You can also get ice water for free at quick-service food locations, where you walk up to a counter to order (but not at kiosks).

Plus Size Accommodations at Disney World

We’re about to look at the best Disney World rides for fat people. But first, let’s talk about some essential things to note about attractions and plus size accommodations at Disney World.

Weight Limit on Disney Rides

While there are height requirements, Disney World rides do not have weight limits.

We reached out to the Magical Kingdom for confirmation! Disney World assured us that no theme park attractions have weight limits. However, many rides feature restraint devices which may prevent some guests from being able to ride.

However, just because a ride has a seatbelt or lap bar doesn’t mean it’s not size-friendly. So, rest assured that we’ll spotlight attractions that plus size Disney guests are cautious about.

Disney World encourages anyone with doubts or questions to ask the hosts at the attraction’s entrance. This way, you’ll get reassurance about riding or not before getting in line.

Thankfully, many (but not all) rides you find at Disney parks in the United States are size-friendly. And overall, Disney World is even more size-friendly than Disneyland.

Seatbelts

Some attractions don’t have any restraint devices, while others have a lap bar, body harness, or seatbelt.

We have some helpful information about seatbelts for guests plus size at Disney World.

Overall, attraction seatbelts are long and accommodating, especially on newer rides. And a few rides offer seatbelt extenders, though this information is ever-changing, so inquire with a cast member if, on a rare occurrence, you need one.

What stands out is that reaching and seeing where to buckle can be tricky. So one hot tip is to stand and buckle your seatbelt, which will tighten once you sit.

Turnstiles

Thankfully, you will encounter only a few turnstiles during your Disney day.

If it looks like it might be a tight fit, you have some options. For example, you can choose to stand sideways while walking through.

Another option is asking to go through the gate for strollers, wheelchairs, and ECVs. And sometimes, you’ll find your party guided through the gate without you even needing to inquire.

Extra Time

Need extra time getting on and off rides? That’s okay! Just be sure to alert a cast member. And if you don’t already know, Disney calls their staff “cast members.”

If you’re concerned about mobility limitations, Disney World has helpful resources, so be sure to review them and reach out with questions.

Ride Alone / Side Preference

When traveling with children and thin friends and family, you likely won’t be able to sit next to them at every attraction.

For example, some rides only have one lap bar. Therefore, a small child may not be able to get fully secure if they sit next to a larger person.

Remember, this is nothing for you to feel ashamed about – it’s just safer to ride alone.

Then there are rides that spin. You want to ensure you’re not sitting on a side where you could easily smoosh into your kiddo.

Disney cast members are always on the lookout for the safety of all guests. Therefore, try not to feel embarrassed if they recommend you switch sides or ride alone.

Test Seats

Many rides that are not as size-accommodating offer a test seat you can try before waiting in a line that can be hours long.

You can ask a cast member for assistance if you don’t see a test seat. For example, the test seat might be in an area you can’t see, though most are in public spaces.

If there isn’t a test seat, and you have concerns, ask the cast member if they can help you to know if you’ll fit before getting in line. They might make their best guess or take you to the front to check.

Restaurants

Most restaurants throughout Walt Disney World have seating areas with armless chairs.

However, if you find yourself seated in an area that only has chairs with arms, be sure to ask for an armless chair. Never feel like you’re an inconvenience; everyone at Disney wants you to feel comfortable!

One thing to note is that the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater car seating is not very size-friendly. Yes, car seating, as in you’re dining in a car. But unfortunately, the table area is not adjustable, like many restaurant booths. Thankfully, a few tables are available, so be sure to inquire.

Parking Lot Trams

The parking lot trams at Disney World are a convenient transportation mode for visitors driving to the theme parks. The trams run from the parking lots to the park entrances, providing a quick and easy way for guests to get to the parks without walking long distances.

For plus size Disney World guests, look for the seating area with two benches facing one another. The door to that area is wider than other areas on the tram.

Talk About Your Size-Inclusive Needs

As Lilo says, “Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.”

When planning a trip to Disney World with family and friends, consider communicating with them about any size-friendly accommodations you may need in the parks.

As we shared above, let them know you might need extra time and a hand getting on and off rides.

When traveling with children, you likely won’t be able to sit next to them on every ride. And it can be helpful to prepare them for that in advance.

Unfortunately, some test seats are in very public areas. For some, having loved ones stand in front of the test seat area and provide encouragement can make the experience less anxiety-inducing. For others, trying out the test seat is a fun experience and a photo opp.

Throughout your Disney day, you want to be mindful of your physical and mental health. So, if doing a test seat in front of a bunch of strangers is just too much, that’s okay. Head over to another ride or take this opportunity to hydrate on a nearby bench while the rest of your party rides.

As long as you’ve communicated your wishes to your party, you’re not getting left behind – you’re doing what you need at that moment. And you sure don’t need to make up excuses if you need time to rest and nourish your body.

So, be open and honest with your loved ones to ensure everyone is ready to support you, and you will all have a great time.

And lastly, never be afraid to go to Guest Services or ask a cast member for assistance with any concerns about being a plus size Disney guest.

Plus Size Friendly Rides at Disney World

The fantastic news is that most of the attractions at Walt Disney World are size-friendly.

Below we’re spending the most time focused on visiting the Magic Kingdom. Then, we’ll highlight unique things you should know as a plus size Disney World guest visiting Disney Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

Magic Kingdom

Before we walk through the entire park, you’ll see a list of rides that Walt Disney World has noted might not be accommodating for plus size guests.

Magic Kingdom Rides That May Not Be Size-Friendly

Astro Orbiter Attraction (seat belt)

The Barnstormer Attraction (lap bar)

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Attraction (lap bar)

Space Mountain Attraction (lap bar, very confined space)

Tomorrowland Indy Speedway (seat belt)

Dumbo the Flying Elephant® Attraction (seat belt, very confined space)

Magic Carpets of Aladdin (seat belt, very confined space)

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (lap bar)

TRON Lightcycle (there is a bucket-style seat that’s more accommodating)

As we learned from the movie Up, adventure is out there! So, if you’re ready, let’s explore the Magic Kingdom park, and we’ll provide additional details for the rides listed above.

Park Entrance

As you’re entering the Magic Kingdom, you’ll see wide turnstiles. However, if you prefer, ask to have the gate designated for wheelchairs, scooters, and strollers opened for your convenience.

We encourage you to advocate for what feels best throughout your Disney day. Cast members are happy to help with accommodations and will do so in a way that doesn’t feel stigmatizing.

Main Street U.S.A.

While strolling down Main Street, stay cautious of where you’re stepping to avoid tripping or injuring your ankle.

Otherwise, enjoy all the sites and shops. And when going into shops, often you can open two side-by-side doors if going through one feels tight.

Main Street Vehicle

If you can catch a ride on a Main Street Vehicle, a cast member will help you climb up where you’ll see bench seating that’s pretty accommodating. You’ll need to judge your comfort level attempting to get on and off the vehicle.

Walt Disney World Railroad

The Walt Disney World Railroad is generally size-friendly for plus size guests.

The trains accommodate a wide range of body types and sizes. However, some train cars have slightly narrower seats than others.

Additionally, the train has no seat belts or restraints, so guests have more flexibility. If you have concerns about your ability to fit comfortably on the train, please speak with a Cast Member at the attraction for assistance.

Many of the train stops in different lands require you to walk up a set of stairs. However, there are ramps available for wheelchair users. And unless you’re boarding the train with a wheelchair, be prepared to step up approimently 12 inches to board the train. Once onboard, the seats are wooden benches with backs.

Families should note that strollers must be folded up to be carried on. Unfortunately, Disney’s rental strollers don’t fold up, so you can’t take those strollers onboard.

Adventureland

The attractions in Adventure Land are very accommodating, and most are bench seats. And with bench seats, if you feel like you need more room, you can always choose to ride alone.

Enchanted Tiki Room

The Enchanted Tiki Room attraction is a great spot to rest, recuperate, and take in a fun show. And with bench seating, it’s very size-accommodating.

Jungle Cruise

While the bench seating inside the boat is very accommodating, it’s quite a step down to get into the boat. With that said, cast members offer a helping hand, and you can get assistance from your loved ones.

Once onboard, sit back and enjoy a fun and entertaining boat ride!

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin

To board the carpet vehicle, you must step up and over a decorative feature on the vehicle’s side, approximately 6 inches tall, before accessing the bench seat designed for two adults.

Once in, it’s a great fit for those plus size at Disney World, but you might want to ride alone. And remember, there’s nothing wrong with that!

Pirates of the Caribbean

You may feel pressured to move fast as you get ready to board the boat for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. But remember, telling a cast member you need more time is okay. And the step into the boat can be wet, so be sure to take your time for your safety.

Once seated, you’ll notice there isn’t a lap restraint for the bench seating, so it’s size-friendly. Also, aside from the front row, you should have plenty of legroom.

Swiss Family Treehouse

If you’re up for climbing 128 steps (6 stories), you’ll see a fantastic view from the top of the Swiss Family Treehouse. The walkways and stairways are accommodating for people of most sizes.

Fantasyland

Fantasyland is known for its enchanting rides that transport guests into beloved fairy tales. But it’s also an area of a park with some less size-accommodating attractions that you’ll want to consider riding alone. And one you might want to avoid completely.

The Barnstormer

The Barnstormer is one of those tighter-fitting rides designed for younger guests. But don’t feel like you need to skip it completely; just consider riding alone or with a smaller seatmate.

Tall and plus size riders should consider avoiding cars with an overhead wing, making getting in and out a bit more difficult.

Once you step over the side of the car, you’ll pull down a lap bar. So a bit of mobility is required, and you’ll find that is the case for many of these rides in Fantasyland.

Dumbo the Flying Elephant

Like the Barnstormer, Dumbo the Flying Elephant is a ride with a bench seat that can be a tight squeeze for two larger adults. So, consider riding with a kiddo or enjoy a few precious moments of “me-time” by yourself.

You’ll be relieved to know the seatbelt is extra long once you climb into your seat.

If you ride with a child, put them on the inside of the elephant so they are on the opposite side of where you’re going to lean.

Enchanted Tales with Belle

If you’re a Beauty and the Beast fan, you’ll love this walkthrough attraction featuring an interactive storytelling experience where guests volunteer and participate.

It may sometimes feel crowded while walking during the first two parts of the attraction. But then you’ll arrive at padded bench seats for the final part of the show.

The Enchanted Tales with Belle attraction is about 20 minutes long.

“It’s a small world”

While lacking in legroom, especially in the front row, the bench seats for this iconic Disney boat ride accommodate plus size guests.

Taking your time while getting in and out of the boat is always a good idea. And having someone from your group offer a helping hand can make the experience even better.

Mad Tea Party

These spinning teacups are a Disney classic. And while this attraction has no restraints, it can still be a tight squeeze depending on your size. This is due to a wheel spinner in the middle of the teacup, allowing riders to control how quickly the attraction can spin.

Also, the narrow opening of the teacup, where people often step sideways to get in, can be a tight fit.

Some plus size riders share it’s okay if their stomach touches the wheel in the middle, as it doesn’t impact their ability to spin. And others feel like sitting near the entrance to the teacup provides a little extra wiggle room.

Be mindful if you ride with kids. Spinning may cause you to smoosh into your teacup seatmates. But, of course, you can choose to ride alone.

And remember to address any concerns with a cast member; they’ll gladly assist.

Mickey’s Philharmagic

Walking into a theater and seeing chairs with arms can be distressing when you’re plus size. And that’s what you’ll happen upon when experiencing Mickey’s Philharmagic, a 3-D movie starring Mickey and Donald that runs about ten minutes.

Numerous Disney guests who are plus sized have expressed that the theater seats are indeed comfortable. And they suggest sitting on the seat’s edge and sliding back rather than sitting directly between the armrests.

Rest assured that you can still enjoy the show from an armless chair if the seat doesn’t work for you. You’ll just need to ask a cast member.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

With bench seats, the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is a Pooh Size friendly ride! A bar comes down but is not restrictive. And for extra legroom, ask to sit up front.

Peter Pan’s Flight

Away we go, on Peter Pan’s Flight!

As you step upon a moving walkway, you’ll board a pirate sailboat with bench seating. A lap bar comes down only as far as the largest guest in the party, and you can choose to sit alone.

It can be a little snug for some plus-size guests as the bar comes down. A tip from Jess, who calls Disney World her second home, is to sit up straight as the bar comes down so it’s not as tight on your stomach. She feels that helps a lot.

Prince Charming Regal Carousel

As you step on the carousel, you can choose to ride a horse if you’re comfortable climbing up and swinging your leg over. Larger horses are on the outer ring, and the horses get smaller as you move toward the center.

Remember, if you ride a horse, it will go up and down. So, if you stared low, you might end higher. Or you can choose to sit on the stationary chariot with bench seats.

Princess Fairytale Hall

This is a meet-and-greet area where you can take pictures with your favorite Disney princesses.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is an attraction many plus size Disney World guests choose to bypass as it’s a tight squeeze, as shown in the video below.

The confined seat and lap bar positioning push the rider’s knees close to their stomach. And this can cause discomfort for some.

If you want to ride but are worried about the fit, talk to a Disney cast member before getting in line.

Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid

Like many attractions in Fantasyland, you’ll find an accommodating bench seat with a lap bar.

Frontierland

This land features several popular attractions, with various experiences that visitors of different sizes can enjoy.

Big Thunder Mountain

This popular ride is fun for plus size guests thanks to the bench seating and lap bar!

However, due to that one lap bar, you’ll want to ride this one alone if you’re concerned about your fellow rider needing to be fully secure. Also, you’ll get jostled around a lot on this wild ride.

If you need extra legroom, get in line for the car upfront.

Country Bear Jamboree

This attraction has wooden bench seats, so plus size guests can sit with ease and enjoy the show.

Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade

This is a fun interactive park area, but it can get pretty crowded. So at times, it might be a tight squeeze for guests of all sizes.

Tom Sawyer Island

Tom Sawyer Island features activities, including caves, forts, and walking trails. To get to the island, you’ll take a standing raft.

It’s important to note that certain island areas, such as narrow walkways or steep stairs, could challenge guests with mobility issues or larger body types. With that said, there are many benches for you to sit and relax while your kids get out their wiggles.

Liberty Square

Overall the attractions in Liberty Square are size-friendly or offer accommodations if needed.

The Hall of Presidents

For this theatre seating attraction, many plus size guests prefer sitting between empty seats. And Like with Mickey’s Philharmagic, if the chairs with arms aren’t comfortable, you can ask a cast member for an armless chair.

Haunted Mansion

You’ll board the Haunted Mansion Doom Buggies from a moving walkway, so if you need more time, alert a cast member.

Once seated, a lap bar will come down, but it’s not very restrictive. And if you feel more comfortable, you can sure ride alone!

Watch your step as the buggies can shift when it comes time to disembark.

Liberty Square Riverboat

Step back in time and have a lovely ride aboard the Liberty Square Riverboat. Once onboard, you’ll notice limited bench seating, so most guests stand. And you can explore three levels of the boat, but note that the steps are steep.

Tomorrowland

While there’s a lot of excitement awaiting you in Tomorrowland, there are a few attractions you’ll want to be aware of if you’re plus size at Disney World.

Astro Orbiter

The Astro Orbiter is a small, low-sitting car without much legroom. So, it can be a tight squeeze for plus size guests and those who are tall. Deifetnly, inquire with a cast member if you are concerned about riding comfortably.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

You’ll board from a moving walkway into a vehicle with bench seating. Once seated, the front of the car closes, and two laser guns are within reach. As always, with these bench seat rides designed for two average size adults, feel free to ride alone.

Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor

Sit and relax on bench seats and enjoy the Monsters, Inc. show!

Space Mountain

This popular attraction can be a tight fit for plus size guests as the ride is a confined space with a lap bar.

You’ll need to step down into a low single seat and be able to pull yourself up once the ride is complete.

Tomorrowland Speedway

The Tomorrowland Speedway cars are small and low to the ground, so getting in and out can be difficult, depending on mobility limitations. Once seated on the bench seat, you’ll find one seatbelt. Remember, cast members are always happy to assist you.

TRON Lightcycle Run

You’ve likely heard this exciting new attraction isn’t size-friendly. The TRON Lightcycle requires riders to climb on a motorcycle with leg clamps. So if you have larger calves, it might not work.

There is a test seat, but unfortunately, it’s in a very public area.

The good news is that a few regular seats are available, so you can still enjoy the ride. However, be aware that you’ll likely need to wait longer for one of these more accommodating seats with a lap bar.

Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress

This Carousel of Progress could use a little updating with a turnstile to enter that can be snug and theater seating that has chairs with arms. But as we’ve shared before, cast members are standing by to assist you and ensure your day is magical!

Disney Hollywood Studios

Now we’ll briefly explore other areas of Walt Disney World with lists of rides that may not be size-friendly at Disney Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

Remember to use all the tips we’ve shared, including asking cast members if you have any concerns about any of the attractions listed. And best of all, there are so many rides and magical experiences awaiting you that are size-friendly!

Disney Hollywood Studios Rides That May Not Be Size-Friendly

Star Tours -The Adventures Continue Attraction (seat belt)

Rock ‘N Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith (harness and confined space)

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (seat belt)

Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind is pictured below and size-friendly!

Do you want to go on a cruise as a plus size person but have concerns?

Are you worried about the bathroom size and weight limits on cruise excursions?

Do you wonder how to pack plus size cruise wear?

You’ve come to the right place!

Travel Agents and seasoned plus size travelers, Jimmy and Amanda of Chubby And Away, talk about going on a cruise while plus size.

We’re covering all your concerns and bringing up some points you probably haven’t even considered in this extensive resource.

Before we lift anchor, you should know that kids are free on many cruise lines.

So, going on a cruise is an excellent option for a family vacation with plenty of activities for people of all ages (and sizes).

Cruises For Plus Size People

While we wish we could provide you with an extensive list of fat friendly cruises, the reality is all cruise lines and ships are different!

Cruise ships are often being refurbished (thank goodness), and sparkling brand ships are setting sail.

How do you find the best cruise line for obese people?

We encourage you to spend time looking at ship tours via cruise line’s websites and go onto YouTube to watch videos.

Virtual tours provide you with insight on crucial obstacles people of size commonly face while going on a cruise that we address in this resource.

For example, does the stateroom bathroom have a shower curtain instead of doors?

Curtains allow for the bathroom to be far more accessible for people of size (a lot more on that will be covered below).

And one of our biggest pet peeves, does the theater seating look size inclusive?

If you can’t find a recent virtual tour or still have unanswered questions after viewing one, call the customer service line for the cruise.

Another option is to connect with Chubby And Away for their size-inclusive travel agent services.

Thankfully cruise lines are starting to pay more attention to the needs of people of size, and newer ships tend to have shower curtains and accommodating theater seating!

Getting To Your Cruise As A Person Of Size

If you’re lucky enough to live within driving distance to a port, that’s your best bet! Drive, park, and enjoy your vacation.

For most of us, however, a flight is required to get to your cruise’s departure location.

Flying not only limits the amount of luggage you can take with you but also can be a source of anxiety for people of all sizes.

Thankfully we’ve got you covered with this extensive Flying While Fat resource that includes how to get a free middle seat via Southwest’s Customer Of Size Policy.

Plus Size Cruise Wear

When you research going on a cruise as a plus size person, the topic you’ll see mentioned most is plus size cruise wear.

We get it, people of all sizes want to look adorable while on vacation.

When you’re plus size, clothing not only takes up more space in your luggage but also weighs more.

Most cruise ships don’t have a limit on the luggage you can bring, but if you’re flying to your departure port, airlines do have limitations.

The reality is most people pack far more clothes and shoes than they’ll wear.

While you can use helpful packing tricks like rolling or space bags, start by paring down what you’re bringing!

You can do laundry aboard the ship, and rotate the clothes you bring by mixing and matching outfits.

Remember, your stateroom will probably be small so you don’t want to fill it with luggage beyond what you can fit under the bed and in the closet.

You truly don’t need to bring an outfit for each day!! Pack a few staples, a formal outfit or two, and most importantly, comfortable shoes.

Concerns About Cabin Size

Cruising 101 – the more you spend, the bigger the stateroom. With that said, you aren’t in your cabin very often. You just need to be able to comfortably sleep, shower, and pee!

If you’re concerned about having a tight room, an interior cabin isn’t ideal, but it’s manageable for people of most sizes (see our section on bathroom accessibility below).

If you can afford a bit more, a balcony cabin will provide you with a few more square feet.

Just note, the balcony chairs provided almost always have arms and are not accommodating for people of size.

Every cruise line has accessible staterooms, but they are reserved for people with disabilities.

You can inquire with your cruise line regarding their qualifications, and if you might be able to request an accessible stateroom close to your departure date if they haven’t already been filled.

Regardless of what size room you get, be sure to take really good care of your room steward beyond the gratuity you pay as part of being on a cruise.

Once you get settled in your room, Amanda highly recommends writing a quick note for your room steward along with a $20 bill before you set out to explore the ship.

She always does this and shares that the staff is incredibly thankful and takes fantastic care of all her needs throughout her stay!

Cruise Ship Bathroom Size And Accessibility

One of the biggest unspoken concerns people have about going on a cruise is being able to fit in a tiny bathroom comfortably to shower and use the toilet.

We’re going to address all your cruise ship bathroom questions in great detail, so you feel far more at ease!

As we mentioned above, try selecting a cruise line that has a shower curtain rather than a shower door. With this layout, the entire bathroom essentially becomes the shower, and it’s very accommodating for people of size.

The bathroom floor has drains, so you don’t need to worry about getting water everywhere.

Having a shower curtain instead of doors also allows more room for you to sit on the toilet comfortably.

And fear not, the toilet is far more sturdy than it feels when you sit down on the plastic seat.

Remember everything on a cruise ship has a little give, so the odds are quite slim that you’re going to break the toilet.

With all of this shared, what can you do if the bathroom is too small for you to shower or use the toilet?

Unfortunately, cruises are almost always at 100% capacity, so the likelihood of you being moved to a different room is slim, but it never hurts to ask.

There are accessible bathrooms located throughout the ship that are far more roomie than the one in your cabin.

If you need more space to shower, all cruise lines have spas with showers. Address your needs with the cruise staff and request a spa pass – we sure hope they won’t charge you!

Seating Throughout The Ship

Theater seating can be a nightmare when you’re plus size, as the seats are often smaller than airplane seats. While newer ships are more accommodating, you might run into this issue.

Always know that you can advocate for yourself and address any concerns with cruise staff! Ask for seating accommodations to be made for you.

Thankfully from dining to lounging, you’ll almost always find chairs without arms throughout cruise ships.

The staff is trained to look out for your needs. They often direct people to chairs without arms without you even needing to ask.

If you’re ever in an area where there aren’t size-inclusive chairs, be sure to advocate for your needs by addressing concerns with staff.

Transportation On And Off The Ship

When your ship arrives at most ports, you use a small boat called a tender to be transported to your destination.

Tenders are size inclusive because they almost always have bench seating.

In most cases, you’ll walk down a ramp and then step down into the tender boat. Staff members are trained to help guide people on and off the moving tender.

Take your time and accept the help that is being offered! Remember the staff is trained to help people of all sizes, ages, and abilities.

Weight Limits On Cruise Excursions

Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of information provided about the accessibility for plus size people during group excursions.

There will always be unknowns when it comes to weight limits on cruise excursions and inclusive seating options.

Amanda and Jimmy share some frustrations with cruise excursions during the podcast recording at the bottom of this article.

Rather than going on an excursion planned via the cruise line, Amanda and Jimmy almost always do their own excursions.

It’s important to note, unlike a cruise excursion, the ship will not wait for you. If you are running late for the departure time, you can get left behind.

A helpful tip Jimmy shares is to have a watch set to cruise time. The time zone of the port might not be the same time that your cruise ship is going off of that day.

Each morning you’ll be provided with cruise time so you can set your watch accordingly. Make sure you’re not relying on a watch connected to a network, like an Apple watch, that will update timezones automatically.

You need to do what is most comfortable for you. If you decide to go on a cruise excursion, speak up, and advocate for your needs!

Eating On A Cruise Ship

It’s easy to worry that people will judge you, especially when it comes to unlimited food options and quantities.

Amanda and Jimmy share they have only been met with kindness and compassion. They’ve never felt judged and are often encouraged to try whatever sounds good on the menu.

For starters, let the staff know about any dietary restrictions. Then try not to worry about what others might think as you enjoy your vacation.

Hot tip – be sure to bring a water bottle on board. There are plenty of stations with liquids provided at no charge from water to tea!

Chaya Milchtein, an automotive educator, talks about all things related to larger bodies and cars. She answers questions we might be too embarrassed to ask! For example, what to do if the seatbelt doesn’t fit when you get into a car? Or how to navigate car shopping when you have a large body.

Larger Bodies And Cars

Purchasing a vehicle is often stressful and confusing.

Unfortunately, car buying challenges become doubled when the buyer is plus size as not all vehicles are size-inclusive.

The lack of information out there exacerbates the difficulties that plus-size individuals encounter when buying a vehicle.

Automotive manufacturers don’t release data on if their cars meet the needs of those with larger bodies.

Even the Internet is unhelpful, containing only articles that use humiliating and degrading language to describe plus-size people’s unique needs.

This gap in the market is exactly what Chaya Milchtein is attempting to fill. An automotive educator from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Chaya has made it her life’s mission to educate those in the plus size and LGBTQ communities about their cars.

Her work on the Mechanic Shop Femme website has been instrumental in empowering people to take ownership of their vehicles.

As a plus-size woman herself, Chaya knows a thing or two about the challenges that larger people encounter when navigating the car industry.

How do you know if you will fit in a car?

Many people rely upon seat measurements to know if a vehicle is accommodating for larger bodies and cars.

This isn’t a foolproof method, though. According to Chaya, the size of the seat doesn’t necessarily mean that it can accommodate a plus size driver or passenger, given the many other features found in a car.

Instead, she recommends putting in the time and effort to test-drive multiple vehicles to determine the best possible option.

This process will likely take a long time; however, the result will be well worth it.

Chaya also urges plus size individuals to actively seek out what other plus size people have experienced in the car models they’re interested in buying. For her, these personal stories are much more reliable than information gathered from the Internet or salespeople.

“There are ways to make things more accessible,” says Chaya in an interview with Jen McLellan of the Plus Mommy podcast. “You just have to give yourself time to educate yourself and spend enough time to learn about the car and what your needs are. Don’t feel pressured to make any specific purchase until you’re sure that’s the right thing for you.”

Related: Plus Size Travel With Chubby And Away

While seat size isn’t a perfect determiner of whether a vehicle can accommodate larger body frames, Chaya claims that they can work as a great starting point.

For example, she notes that the five-door subcompact Kia Soul is a popular choice for those in the plus size community, thanks to its larger than average seats.

In addition to this, Chaya also urges plus size individuals to invest in a good seatbelt extender.

Chaya cautions people to ensure any modifications don’t compromise or interfere with the vehicle’s built-in safety features.

What to do if you don’t fit comfortably in a car?

Plus size individuals often face situations where they have to either rent a vehicle or ride with someone they know.

They might be in a situation where the vehicle isn’t accommodating, from a seatbelt that doesn’t fit to click or the seat being too tight and uncomfortable.

These situations can be embarrassing, and people often forgo using a seatbelt when one doesn’t fit.

Chaya stresses that it’s essential to prepare oneself when there’s a likelihood that these scenarios will happen.

For instance, carrying a seatbelt extender would ensure that the vehicle’s features can be quickly modified to suit their requirements.

Related: 5 Things Only Plus Size Women Understand

It’s the same for flying while plus size; there’s no shame in asking for an extender. What’s most important is that people are safe while traveling.

Chaya also urges plus-size individuals to not be afraid to say no, especially if there isn’t a chance that they’ll be both comfortable and secure when riding a particular vehicle.

“Maybe it feels like it’s safe to drive in a car without a seatbelt, but it’s incredibly unsafe, especially with all the technology that’s built into the vehicle, like the collision centers and airbags,” she explains. “You want to make sure that you’re properly secure, even if that means turning down a ride or carrying a seatbelt extender or having a friend pick a different car or borrowing a car yourself.”

Plus size individuals shouldn’t be afraid to advocate for themselves and their needs, particularly when the situation puts their safety on the line.

What should I do if I don’t fit in an Uber or Lyft?

Another example that Chaya gave about the crucial role that self-advocacy is when using ride-share companies like Uber and Lyft.

Unsurprisingly, these cars are often not modified to accommodate plus size individuals and their needs. Including the fact that seatbelts found in the backseat are usually much shorter than those in the front seats.

Don’t pretend like the seatbelt fits if it doesn’t. People should switch to the passenger’s seat if they can’t use the seatbelt and don’t have an extender onhand.

While doing so can be intimidating, it’s certainly much better than compromising safety! Especially since the driver isn’t someone they know and trust.

Given Chaya’s work, it’s safe to assume that navigating the automotive industry can be challenging if you’re plus size. However, these problems can be easily resolved with thorough research and the willingness to advocate for oneself.

During a recent trip to Disneyland, as a plus size mom, I realized how different it was to experience Disney with a larger body.

Disneyland rides for obese people* can be challenging but no one talks about it.

There are many Disneyland and California Adventure attractions that are not designed with plus size people in mind.

I invited my friend Sam Reyes, a self-proclaimed Disney Dork, to join me in covering all things Disneyland for plus size guests.

*As plus size women who love Disneyland, we don’t like the o-word, but we really want people to find this resource. The phrase “Disneyland rides for obese people” matches the words people are searching to find this information. The good news – you won’t see the o-word again in this article! Thanks for understanding.

Traveling To Disneyland When You’re Plus Size

When you’re plus size, travel can put more wear on your body.

Some people experience extreme swelling after travel and that can make walking Disneyland for hours even more difficult. This is something to keep in mind while planning your trip!

Consider building in downtime between travel and your Disney adventures, if you’re able, as well as, purchasing plus size compression socks before your trip.

Southwest has great deals for flights, and they offer the Customer of Size policy that you can read all about via Flying While Fat.

Also, if you’re searching for a local hotel within walking distance of the park, the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel & Water Playground is a fantastic family-friendly location.

Disneyland Plus Sized Guests Parking Recommendations

Rather than going to the Disneyland parking structures, consider the Toy Story Parking Area located at 300 W. Katella Ave, Anaheim, CA 92802.

Once parked you’ll be able to walk a short distance to a shuttle bus that will drop you off in front of the entrance to Disneyland and California Adventure.

The shuttle bus allows for easy on and off for people of different sizes and abilities.

If you park in the Mickey & Friends or Pixar Pals Parking Structure (accessible via Disneyland Drive, Magic Way, and West Ball Road), you will take a tram to a drop-off area located close to the parks but not directly in front.

There’s wider seating on the ends of each tram, and the doors are also wider to get on and off.

Both parking options cost $25, and you can learn more here.

There’s also the Anaheim ART Shuttle for a small fee that drops you off right in front of the entrance of the parks. The ART Shuttle is ADA compliant, allows motorized scooters, onto the bus as well as, wheelchairs and strollers.

Disney Hotel Suggestions

Take a good look at hotel reviews and look for options that offer shuttles to Disneyland or ease access to ART Shuttles.

You can request weight limits for hotel beds, if you’re concerned.

Bonus! Look for hotels that offer free breakfast because the food at Disney parks can get pricey!

Speaking of Disneyland food options, if you have a food allergy like a gluten intolerance, both Disneyland and California Adventure are very accommodating.

Disneyland With Motorized Scooters

If you or someone in your group needs a motorized scooter, you can rent one from a local company or from Disneyland directly.

Most independent rental options will cost half as much as renting from Disneyland and they can drop-off and pick-up the scooter to your hotel.

Disneyland will charge your scooter for you, if the battery gets drained, so that’s one less thing for you to worry about.

Disneyland and California Adventure are mindful of the needs of people with different abilities and have this helpful resource, Services for Guests with Mobility Disabilities.

Tips To Avoiding Chafing

Lather up! MONISTAT Chafing Gel will be your best friend, as well as, other anti-chafing options for plus size people. You can read about these via Chub Rub Solutions.

Don’t forget to pack a stick of deodorant to refresh yourself with mid-day and apply lots of sunscreen throughout the day!

Shoes To Wear to Disneyland

Bring multiple pairs of shoes from comfortable tennis shoes to walking sandals!

By changing out your shoes throughout the day, you’ll be able to walk longer and further.

Plus, if you go on one of the water rides, you can wear sandals and protect your shoes from getting soaked.

Plus Size Disney Clothes

When it comes to picking out what you’re going to wear to Disneyland, there are some really cute plus size Disney clothes available!

Torrid has many adorable Disney options that go up to a size 30 like this plus size Minnie Mouse dress.

You can also find Disney plus size shirts on Amazon!

Here’s a fun Disney fact, Disneyland shirts that have a date on them, “65th Celebration,” for example, often go all the way up to 6XL inside of the park. You just need to ask a Cast Member for the larger sizes!

What To Wear To Disneyland As A Plus Size Guest

What’s most important is that you’re comfortable, so wearing Disney branding clothing sure isn’t a requirement.

From yoga pants, shorts, dresses with leggings, to jeans and a tank top — just wear whatever you think you’ll be comfy in walking for miles and getting on and off rides.

Consider packing backup clothes because you’ll likely get hot and sweaty throughout your Disney day. If nothing else pack an extra pair of underwear and consider wearing a plus size leak-proof pair.

Bring A Backpack

Suggestions of items to pack in your backpack for your day at Disneyland – snacks, water bottle, backup clothes (including an extra pair of socks and underwear), sunscreen, deodorant, any medication you might need, as well as, backup clothes and items for your kids.

Before Entering Disneyland or California Adventure As A Plus Sized Guest

Hydrate And Medicate

Bring a refillable water bottle, and be sure to drink plenty of water not just throughout the day but well before you arrive.

At every Disney concession area that offers fountain drinks, you can ask for free ice water. Note that Disneyland is cutting down on plastic so drinks don’t come with lids (you’ll need to ask for one).

Disneyland also has paper straws so if you prefer your own reusable straw don’t forget to put one in your backpack!

If you’re concerned about pain and inflammation, you can take something like ibuprofen (unless your doctor says otherwise).

You can also bring your own over-the-counter or prescription medicine into the park. Tylenol is available to purchase in the parks but it’s pricey compared to your local drug store.

While cannabis is legal for recreational and medical purchase in California, Disneyland does not allow it in any form on their property.

Disneyland App

Be sure to download the free Disneyland App before you enter the park. This way you’ll know how long the wait is for rides, see pathways throughout the park to help you get from land to land quicker, and seating areas.

Disneyland For Plus Sized Guests Guide

Below we’ll walk through every land in Disneyland and point out tips for what rides are or aren’t size-friendly.

Not every ride will be covered, but most are and you’ll learn a ton for planning a trip to Disneyland without having to worry about your size!

When the ADA entrance for attractions is mentioned that’s usually the attraction’s exit.

Don’t be afraid to approach a Disney Cast Member with questions or concerns throughout the day.

They’ve assisted people of all sizes and abilities. They are there to support you with compassion and help to make your day magical!

Most importantly, listen to your body throughout the day and sit down when you need to rest.

You need to do what’s best for you and try not to care what strangers may think. Your Disney day is all about you and your family!

Park Entrance

The turnstiles are wide but you can ask to have the gate, used for wheelchairs, scooters, and strollers, opened for you if you’d prefer.

Advocate for your needs and comfort from the start of your Disney day!

Speaking of turnstiles, if you’re unable to get through them anywhere at both parks, just ask a Cast Member for the ADA entrance and they’ll be happy to help you.

You’ll be able to get on the ride relatively soon if it’s not busy. If the ride has a long wait, the Cast Member might scan your ticket and provide you with a time to come back.

There are a few rides at Disneyland that have a turnstile in the middle of the line for the attraction, and we’ll point those out throughout this guide to Disneyland while plus size.

When it comes to rides with seat belts, most are extremely size-friendly! A helpful tip is to pull the seat belt all the way out and then sit down and it will tighten.

Main Street, U.S.A.

Main Street has many seating areas so stop and rest whenever you need a break and be sure to hit up City Hall if you have something special to celebrate.

As you’re walking along Main Street, be mindful of the tracks, as you don’t want to trip or roll your ankle. Disneyland has made great improvements but beware.

Disneyland Railroad

The Disneyland Railroad with stops on Main Street, New Orleans Square, Mickey’s Toontown and Tomorrowland, can be a helpful way to get around the park.

There are two different styles of trains. One train has rows of benches facing outward from the train.

This train is fun because you’re looking out onto the park throughout your ride. This seating design is also more size accommodating than the other train with the traditional rows of bench seats facing the front of the train.

Be sure to ask the Cast Member loading the train for the wider seating area, at the end of each train, as the train with rows facing the front can be a tight squeeze getting on and off.

Adventureland

Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room

The Tiki Room is a fantastic place to sit, with size-friendly benches, and air conditioning.

You can also bring food and drinks inside the Tiki Room. There’s an ADA ramp if you can’t walk up the stairs.

The Tiki Room was originally a restaurant so there’s a bathroom not many people know about. You can use it and hopefully there won’t be a long line!

Jungle Cruise

This Disney classic ride is great for the whole family and it’s size-friendly. The only problem is there’s a tight turnstile.

You can go to the ADA entrance if you have any concerns about fitting comfortably and let the Cast Member know you need to enter this way.

Indiana Jones

Indiana Jones is a ride with a tight turnstile in the middle of the very long line and a narrow stairwell.

If you can’t go up and down the stairs or have concerns about the turnstile, then just ask a Cast Member for the ADA entrance.

Once you get onto the ride, the seating area can be a bit snug but the seatbelt, like pretty much all seat belts at Disneyland and California Adventure, are very long.

New Orleans Square

Pirates of the Caribbean

This ride is completely size-friendly and family friendly! You can wear your baby on the ride if you like to babywear while plus size.

If you’re concerned about the slight incline in the line for the ride, you can go to the ADA entrance, as we’ve talked about before.

The Haunted Mansion

This is a size-friendly and family-friendly ride with an accommodating lap-bar.

You’ll need to get on and off a moving track but you can always ask a Cast Member to stop the track for you.

Note that this ride can be a little scary for young kids.

Critter Country

Splash Mountain

Like Indian Jones, Splash Mountain has some tight walkways but the ride itself is super size friendly!

Be prepared that they usually put larger passengers in the back. There’s no seat belt, just a log you step down into and sit on a bench.

You will get wet, so this ride is a great time to swap out your shoes to sandals, if you haven’t already and you brought an extra pair.

Frontierland

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder is a fun ride that is size-friendly with a pull-down bar.

Note that if you’re riding with a small child, you’ll want to put an arm around them as the bar will go down to accommodate you and leave a lot of room for the little one to bounce around.

The line has some tight squeezes including the walkway with stairs. You can go to the exit and get your ticket scanned for a time to come back and avoid waiting in line.

Throughout Frontierland, there are many seating areas.

Be sure to enjoy the Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia, as these attractions provide a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Disneyland.

Mickey’s Toontown

This is a fun land for kids to meet Mickey, Minnie, and other visiting characters. However, the rides are not size-friendly.

Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin

This can be a tight squeeze getting on and off the ride for someone beyond a size 22, depending upon how your weight is distributed. Once you’re on the ride it’s very roomie.

Gadget’s Go Coaster

This is not a size accommodating roller coaster at Disneyland.

Fantasyland

“It’s a Small World”

This Disney classic has tight turnstiles!

When you get up to the ride, let the cast member know you don’t want to go through the turnstiles. They’ll direct you to what side of the boat to get on so you don’t need to worry about the stairs and tight turnstile exit.

Storybook Land Canal Boats

While the canal boats might not look size-friendly they are, so give it a go! The boat is on a track so it won’t tip or take on water.

Matterhorn Bobsleds

The Matterhorn might be a fun ride, but it’s not a ride accessible to everyone.

The seatbelt is super big but getting in and out is the hard part. You have to do a deep squat and there isn’t anything to hold onto when you get out.

Character Rides

From Peter Pan’s Flight to Snow White’s Scary Adventures most of the other rides in Fantasyland are older.

Older Disney rides mean tight turnstiles and narrow paths throughout the lines!

It’s best to go to the ADA entrance if you have any concerns about fitting. Often you’ll need to wait there awhile to provide time for those who have waited in line to go and then you’ll get to go.

If the moving track needs to be stopped for you to get off and on, just ask.

These rides are super fun to go on with your kids so don’t feel like you need to skip them because of your size.

Just advocate for what you need during your day at Disney and go to the exit rather than the entrance, if you’re worried about the turnstiles.

Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough

If needed, there is an ADA pathway to get into the castle.

Tomorrowland

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue

While the seat belt is very accommodating, the seats have armrests that are not size-friendly.

Before boarding, you can ask a Cast Member for the ADA seat (front left side) with armrests that go up.

Space Mountain

It’s a tight squeeze with a pull-down lap bar. This is a ride that’s not very size-inclusive.

Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters

This ride is so much fun for the whole family and size-friendly with an accommodating lap-bar!

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

You have to go downstairs to get into the submarine and it can be a bit narrow for some people.

There is an ADA option where you sit on a bench in an air-conditioned room. This option is also great for anyone who gets claustrophobic.

Autopia

This is another ride where you have to get down really low and then get yourself back up.

While fun for the kids, it might not be right for you depending on your size.

Disneyland Monorail

The Monorail is a great way to get to Downtown Disney or just take a ride around the park. It’s accommodating for people of different sizes and abilities.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

While in Galaxy’s Edge, there’s so much to experience! The popular Star Wars land bar has plenty of size-friendly seating.

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run

This ride is a blast and unlike Star Tours the chairs are arm-free so very size-friendly and the seatbelt is very size-inclusive. Don’t skip this ride during your next trip to Disneyland!

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

The turnstiles and the door to get into Rise of the Resistance can be snug. Plus size riders recommend turning to the side for the turnstiles and entering the door but find the ride size-friendly overall.

Disneyland For Plus Sized Guests Guide – California Adventure

California Adventure opened in 2001 so all lines for the attractions are ADA compliant. This means you can get in line like all other guests and not have to worry about narrow paths, stairs or turnstiles in the middle of the line.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few rides in California Adventure that are not accommodating to people of size.

Hollywood Land

Hyperion Theater

This theater does not have any size-friendly seating.

If you’re aware of an update to the theater please let us know in the comment section.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!

The seatbelt is extremely accommodating but the seat can be a bit snug. As you’re boarding, ask the Disney Cast Member for the larger seats as there are two on each elevator.

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!

You might need to step to the side as you enter and exit, due to the door having an odd shape, but it’s pretty size accommodating. This ride has a lap bar like the Buzz ride.

Animation Academy

This area of California Adventure is a must-do with or without kids. You can learn how to draw characters and other neat interactive activities. All areas are ADA accessible.

Grizzly Peak

Paradise Gardens Park

Most of the rides in this area, like Jumpin’ Jellyfish and Goofy’s Sky School, are not size accommodating for larger guests.

It’s a good idea to shower off, but you sure won’t be judged if you just crawl into bed after spending a bit of time with your feet elevated.

While planning my 10th wedding anniversary trip to Las Vegas, my husband Chris and I spent a lot of time on YouTube. One night we happened upon a YouTube channel called Chubby And Away. Hosts Jimmy and Amanda share plus size travel tips from around the world.

Chubby And Away isn’t only entertaining it’s also educational! During the Las Vegas episode, I learned about an app called My Vegas. It’s a game you play on your phone to get real perks. Thanks to that tip, Chris and I enjoyed bottomless drinks at our buffet twice while on our trip!

On today’s episode of the Plus Mommy Podcast Jimmy and Amanda of Chubby And Away join me to share their story and plus size travel tips!

We talk not only about being plus size and traveling the world but even just leaving your backyard.

Plus Size Travel

When it comes to things like flying while fat, Chubby And Away breaks down the importance of asking for what you need. They’ve had very positive experiences and almost always are blessed with an empty middle seat while flying to different areas of the world like Asia.

Related: Helpful Tips For Flying While Fat

During our chat, we go well beyond flights! We also address what it’s like to be stared at, navigating having a larger body while living in different countries, finding plus size travel clothing, options for families considering living abroad and so much more!

As you can see in this video below Jimmy and Amanda keep it real while getting a couples massage in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The main takeaway I have from my time with this adorable couple is to never allow your size to hold you back! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I had fun recording it.

We want to inspire you to get out and see the world. So much of the time, folks say they are limited by their physical size and are afraid to travel. These same people put up barriers for themselves before they realize just how easy travel is. Our mission is clear. We are striving to prove to the world (and ourselves) that you can travel no matter your physical ability and knowledge. Knowledge is power, power is great, especially when you have to pull around big suitcases that weigh more because you have bigger clothes. This is going to be so much fun!

The friendly skies can be quite intimidating when you’re flying while fat. Will I be able to fit in the seat comfortably with the armrests down? Can I handle the embarrassment of asking for a seatbelt extender if I need one? What should I do if people give me a dirty look? These are all entirely legitimate concerns that we’ll navigate through while we talk about flying while overweight.

Flying While Overweight

Let’s start by addressing the reality of flying while overweight (or fat). Then share tips for planning ahead, and how to reduce your travel anxiety on the big day.

Between TSA and delayed flights, traveling is stressful enough. Here’s to less turbulence ahead when flying while fat!

What It’s Like To Fly While Fat:

Even if you do everything I’ll mention below, the reality is that you can’t control the occasional stares and snotty comments people might make. All you can do is try to control how you react. Easier said than done, I know!

As with all topics covered on the Plus Mommy Podcast, I think it’s helpful to know you’re not alone in these experiences. Here’s a video that shares many flying while fat stories.

Plan Ahead For Your Flight:

Before you even pack your bags, if you plan ahead for traveling as a larger person it can help you have a smoother experience.

When booking your flight, research your options. If you’re concerned that you might not fit in the seat contact your airline of choice and see what options you have. Whenever possible, consider Southwest Airlines, as they have an outstanding Customer Of Size Policy that we’ll cover below.

The Facebook group, Flying While Fat, is a wonderful resource where people ask questions, and others chime in with their experiences and tips. This Facebook group is a great space to open up about your concerns and hopefully get some helpful responses.

Southwest Customer Of Size Policy:

With Southwest, if you’re unable to put the armrest down, you can use their Customer Of Size Policy. This means you purchase your own seat and then you can get a free middle seat. Yes, you read that correctly, a free middle seat!

You can either purchase an additional seat in advance, and then get a refund after your flight, or request an additional seat when you arrive at check-in the day of your trip. While I share my experience using this policy within the podcast episode below, please review their policy and contact Southwest Airlines with any questions you may have.

Before we move on, I think it’s important to share that the Southwest Customer Of Size Policy, while wonderful, didn’t start off this way. Since I’m recommending you travel with this airline I want to be transparent and tell you about their unfortunate past.

Southwest used to tell people, who they viewed as “too fat to fly” that they needed to purchase an additional seat. They got some terrible press after director Kevin Smith was removed from a flight because of his size.

Now that you know about this too fat to fly past, please know that I’ve only heard positive stories from plus size people who fly Southwest. Personally, I’ve had great experiences flying while fat with this airline.

Southwest has really turned things around! I’m glad they are now a size-friendly airline that I’m happy to financially support and recommend people fly.

Tips For The Day Of Your Flight:

Travel is stressful regardless of your size!
Water Bottle – Airplane bathrooms are not flying while fat friendly! So be sure to go to the bathroom before you board. During your flight try to balance not taking in too many liquids but also be sure to stay hydrated

Plus Size Compression Stockings – These can be helpful for those longer flights!

Uplifting Entertainment – Be it a podcast to listen to (**cough, cough** Plus Mommy Podcast) or a novel to read, having something to take your mind off things. Hopefully, you won’t encounter any fat shaming, but sadly there’s nothing on this list that stops people from being crappy. So if you do get a dirty look or a seatmate who makes you feel bad about yourself, try to tune it out as much as possible. Hopefully, you just need this entertainment for nothing else than to pass the time!

Seatbelt Extender – If you need it, ask for an extender! Your safety should always come first. If asking for one is something that makes you feel too embarrassed, then you can purchase one on Amazon. You’ll want to be sure whatever you purchase works with the airline you’re flying. You can contact the airline directly or ask the Flying While Fat Facebook group for some advice.
