Mental health deserves just as much attention during pregnancy and postpartum as physical health—especially when you’re fat and pregnant, faced with added challenges, including weight stigma, provider bias, and lack of tailored support.

In this deeply personal and educational episode of the Plus Mommy Podcast, host Jen McLellan is joined by psychologist Dr. Linda Baggett to discuss how to protect and prioritize your mental wellness throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Together, they explore therapy, trauma, boundaries, body image, and the importance of community care for people navigating pregnancy in a larger body.

Therapy Is a Form of Prenatal Care

Mental health support isn’t just for moments of crisis; it’s something to consider even before the baby arrives.

Dr. Baggett encourages all expecting parents, especially those with a history of trauma or anxiety, to view therapy as an essential part of prenatal preparation. She shares how even just a few sessions during pregnancy can help people process previous experiences, navigate fears around childbirth, and build confidence.

Seeking out a therapist who is trauma-informed and aligned with Health at Every Size® principles is key when you’re fat and pregnant (or plus-size if you prefer that term).

For those who’ve had negative experiences in healthcare settings, it can be powerful to work with someone who understands how to support you without judgment.

Boundaries Are an Act of Self-Care

From unsolicited advice to weight-focused comments, setting boundaries during pregnancy is crucial.

Dr. Baggett shares that boundaries aren’t about being harsh; they’re about protecting your energy and well-being. This might look like preparing simple, clear responses such as “I’m not open to discussing my weight” or “That topic doesn’t support my well-being right now.”

By practicing these boundary-setting phrases early in pregnancy, you’ll feel more prepared to use them with providers, family, or even strangers.

As Dr. Baggett explains, boundaries are one of the most important mental health tools we have, especially for those who are already navigating systems that can be invalidating or harmful.

Fatphobia in Fertility and Prenatal Care

Dr. Baggett vulnerably shares her own fertility journey at age 40, revealing the fatphobia and medical trauma she experienced—even during procedures performed under anesthesia.

She speaks candidly about being made to feel “othered” in medical spaces, and how she had to fiercely advocate for herself to receive equitable care.

For many plus-size people, these experiences aren’t uncommon.

That’s why Dr. Baggett stresses the importance of finding size-friendly providers who treat you with respect and dignity. Knowing your rights, asking about provider experience with larger bodies, and even bringing a support person to appointments can all help create a safer, more empowering experience.

Body Image Grief Is Real when You’re Fat and Pregnant

There’s a particular kind of grief that can come with not having a baby bump shape that mirrors social media’s narrow beauty standards.

Dr. Baggett acknowledges and normalizes this grief, particularly for those in larger bodies who may feel invisible or judged during pregnancy. It’s okay to feel this way, and it’s important to remember that your experience is valid and worthy of support.

She recommends curating your social media feed to include diverse body sizes, real pregnancy stories, and uplifting content.

Plan Ahead for Postpartum Wellness

Postpartum is often framed as a physical recovery, but the emotional landscape deserves just as much planning.

Dr. Baggett encourages people to create a postpartum mental health plan during pregnancy, just like they might plan for birth.

Key questions to ask yourself:

Who can I talk to if I feel overwhelmed?

What are my signs of anxiety or depression?

What support systems (friends, therapists, community groups) can I lean on?

Having this plan in place makes it easier to take action in the moment, especially when sleep deprivation and hormonal shifts make it harder to think clearly.

Know the Red Flags

While the “baby blues” affect many parents in the first two weeks postpartum, longer-lasting or more intense symptoms may signal a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder (PMAD). Dr. Baggett outlines some key red flags to watch for:

Persistent sadness or hopelessness

Panic attacks or high anxiety

Difficulty bonding with baby

Intrusive thoughts (especially those that feel scary or unwanted)

Disturbed sleep unrelated to the baby’s schedule

If any of these signs show up, you are not failing—you are human. Help is available, and recovery is possible with the right support.

Dr. Baggett emphasizes that while most people will never experience postpartum psychosis, it’s important to understand the signs and talk with your provider about any history of bipolar disorder or previous episodes of psychosis.

Resources like Postpartum Support International can offer urgent help and guide you to appropriate care.

Learn from parenting expert Oona Hanson as she shares insights on breaking the cycle of diet culture, fostering body positivity, and supporting your child’s intuitive eating journey.

How do you help parents avoid projecting their issues with food onto their children?

Many parents want to break the cycle they experienced growing up. It’s crucial to approach this with self-compassion.

We were raised in diet culture, and those messages are deeply ingrained.

During high-stress times, it’s easy to default to familiar phrases and behaviors.

Acknowledging this and striving for progress rather than perfection is key. Open communication and empathy are essential.

Discussing body changes and normalizing these conversations can create a supportive environment for your children.

Teens and parents can both experience hormonal changes at the same time. How can this be a perfect opportunity for connection?

It’s a unique time when both parents and teens might be going through hormonal changes together (hello, perimenopause). Instead of seeing it as a challenge, it can be a perfect opportunity for connection.

Normalizing body changes, like needing new clothes or dealing with acne, can open up important conversations.

For example, you might say, “It’s time to go through our clothes for the new season. I’ve got some pants that don’t fit anymore. How about you?”

This normalizes body changes and can lead to deeper discussions about how all bodies keep changing.

By addressing these topics openly, we can create a supportive environment where teens feel comfortable discussing their own changes.

How will the AAP guidelines impact efforts to help kids foster a healthy relationship with food and body image?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends, along with therapy, that doctors offer weight loss drugs to adolescents with a high BMI starting at age 12 and evaluate those 13 and older with a high BMI for bariatric surgery.

It’s a challenging time. The AAP guidelines have made pediatrician’s offices even less safe for kids in larger bodies.

We need to approach this with a mix of education and advocacy.

Parents need to know that even within these guidelines, doctors need to ask permission to discuss weight.

Advocating for your child might involve setting clear boundaries with medical providers and educating them on the risks associated with discussing weight and body size.

What are some strategies for parents to set boundaries with medical providers?

Pre-written letters or scripts can be very effective.

There are great resources available that provide templates for communicating with healthcare providers.

Another key aspect is self-care.

Parents should find what helps them feel empowered and prepared to advocate for their children. This could be a supportive community, specific strategies for managing stress, or even wearing an outfit that boosts their confidence.

Also be sure to do some good decompression and self-care after these appointments and find community support.

How can we encourage adolescents to eat a variety of foods without creating a sense of restriction or fear?

It’s about balance and offering a variety of foods.

Kids’ energy needs are high, and carbohydrates are a body’s energy source.

Avoiding restrictive behaviors and instead focusing on providing diverse options helps them learn to trust their bodies.

Size-friendly chiropractic care for pregnancy is a core commitment for Dr. Elliot Berlin, a Los Angeles-based chiropractor specializing in pregnancy and postnatal care.

Dr. Berlin is dedicated to ensuring that people of all sizes feel welcome and supported in accessing chiropractic and bodywork.

As a father and someone who’s plus size himself, Dr. Berlin gets the need for care that welcomes everyone, no matter their size.

He designs his care and office to be inclusive and empathetic. And he hopes all healthcare and wellness providers can offer that same level of understanding and support.

As the founder of the Informed Pregnancy Project, Dr. Berlin extends his expertise through various platforms, including a podcast, blog, and new streaming service, all designed to educate and empower expectant parents.

I interviewed him about how chiropractic care can positively influence the journey from trying to conceive through pregnancy to the postpartum period.

What are the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Dr. Berlin is a big advocate for chiropractic care during pregnancy and knows firsthand the difference it can make.

“Mostly what chiropractors have in common is we like to find restricted joints and release them,” Dr. Berlin explains. He points out how the body undergoes numerous changes during pregnancy, which can lead to joints, especially in the spine and pelvis, getting stuck.

This can cause discomfort and make it harder to handle pregnancy’s physical demands.

Chiropractic adjustments focus on freeing those stuck joints to ensure they’re moving smoothly. This helps to ease common pregnancy aches like back and pelvic pain. But it’s not just about pain relief—proper alignment of the spine and pelvis can improve overall body function, from nerves to blood flow, benefiting both parent and baby.

Proper alignment also helps with giving birth.

When the pelvis and spine are in the correct position, there’s a better chance the baby will settle into the optional position for birth. And this potentially eases the birth process and reducing complications.

Dr. Berlin emphasizes that regular chiropractic care isn’t just about alleviating discomfort—it’s about ensuring the body is optimally prepared for a healthy pregnancy and a smoother birth.

And his approach isn’t limited to just chiropractic adjustments; it encompasses overall wellness, including various forms of bodywork.

What advice do you have for plus size individuals seeking size-friendly chiropractic care?

“Look, as a big dude, I have that concern.” Dr. Berlin relates, emphasizing the need for chiropractic practices that comfortably accommodate all body types.

Dr. Berlin is proud of how his practice welcomes people of all sizes. His chiropractic tables can handle 1000 pounds and 750 pounds for massage tables.

He ensures that everything, from seating to treatment areas, are set up to make all patients feel at ease.

“I really love when a larger person comes in. They’re gonna get great care here, they’re gonna relax, and get the same great bodywork just as anybody else would get coming into the office.”

For those seeking a size-friendly chiropractic care in their area, Dr. Berlin recommends calling ahead of time.

This gives you a chance to ask about things like the weight limits of their tables and whether they’re set up to handle all body sizes. It’s also a great way to gauge how welcoming and experienced the staff is with plus size patients. Helping to ensure you find a place where you’ll feel comfortable and supported from the start!

Visiting the doctor is an essential part of maintaining our health and well-being. However, for many people, especially those with larger bodies, doctor visits can become uncomfortable and stigmatizing experiences due to weight bias.

Weight bias becomes evident when healthcare providers excessively focus on a patient’s weight, overshadowing the primary purpose of their visit.

During a doctor’s visit for an eye infection, 71-year-old Kathryn was taken aback as the doctor focused on her weight. He even went as far as suggesting that she would be an ideal candidate for weight loss surgery.

Experiencing Weight Bias at the Doctor’s Office

Kathryn visited the doctor for an eye infection, expecting a quick and straightforward visit. However, things unexpectedly changed when the doctor immediately brought up her weight before even examining her eye.

This doctor questioned whether her primary care physician adequately supported her weight loss efforts. In response, Kathryn shared how she had successfully implemented healthy lifestyle changes over two years, leading to notable yet steady weight loss. She also expressed how this transformation had immensely benefited her and her husband.

Despite Kathryn’s objections, the doctor persisted in recommending weight loss surgery or medications, boasting about his position as the head of weight loss for all of Southern California under her HMO.

Kathryn felt unheard, as the doctor seemed more focused on promoting his approach rather than considering her overall health or the purpose of her visit. Despite sharing her past experiences with other programs offered by the HMO, which resulted in short-term weight loss followed by weight regain, the doctor didn’t appear to take those experiences into account.

Finally, she had enough and directed his attention to her eye infection.

Despite the doctor’s thorough examination, Kathryn remains unconvinced of his diagnosis and is also concerned about the safety of the ointment he recommended for use around her eye.

Throughout the appointment, she felt unheard and disrespected when she asked him to refrain from discussing weight loss interventions, and he kept pushing. Weeks have passed since Kathryn had this appointment, yet she thinks about it daily.

The Impact of Weight Bias

Weight bias in healthcare can profoundly affect a patient’s emotional well-being and willingness to seek routine health care.

Even if the doctor had given Kathryn helpful recommendations, individuals often tend to shut down and ignore the advice when they’ve experienced shaming from their healthcare providers. Such negative encounters can make it challenging for them to remain open to further guidance, regardless of its potential value.

In fact, research indicates that those who feel shame are less inclined to seek routine healthcare and more likely to experience weight gain.

Advocacy Strategies When Confronted with Weight Bias in Healthcare

Here’s how Kathryn intends to advocate for herself moving forward, and these are tips you might find helpful, too.

Clear Communication

In future appointments, Kathryn plans to request that her medical chart include a note indicating that she does not wish to discuss weight loss surgery or weight loss medications. Nor does she ever want to see that doctor again.

Focus on the Main Concern

She will prioritize discussing her primary health concerns first, redirecting the conversation immediately to any issue requiring attention.

Being Weighed is Optional, Not Required

If a future appointment does not require weight measurement, as most don’t, Kathryn knows she has the right to decline to step on the scale.

Reducing Stress

To ensure accurate blood pressure readings, if it’s elevated at the start of her appointment, Kathryn will request to have her blood pressure checked at the end. This will give her sufficient time to relax and speak with her healthcare provider.

Decompress

Lastly, Kathryn takes proactive steps to fully decompress and prevent this traumatic experience from lingering within her. She accomplishes this by confiding in loved ones and sharing what happened with her primary care provider. Additionally, she may choose to send an email to the care provider who caused distress, and she might even consider contacting customer support to file a report about the incident. By taking these measures, she strives to release the burden of the experience and be better prepared for possible future encounters.

Healthcare providers must recognize and address weight bias, ensuring all patients receive the best possible care, free from judgment and stigma.

Kathryn’s experience sheds light on addressing weight bias in healthcare and advocating for patient-centered care. And she hopes to inspire others to be more assertive in seeking the care they deserve.

Don’t miss Kathryn sharing her story in her own words during episode 210 of the Plus Mommy Podcast. As the mother of Jen McLellan, the podcast’s host, she brings a unique perspective and personal insights to the conversation.

Size-Friendly Trauma-Informed Healthcare

Navigating the healthcare landscape isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey.

Weight stigma can give rise to negative biases, assumptions, and judgments focused solely on a person’s body size.

Trauma, too, plays a significant role.

Traumatic experiences can shape our interactions with care providers and can even risk re-traumatization within the healthcare setting.

We also can’t ignore the profound effects of systemic racism and wealth disparity on healthcare access and outcomes.

These realities highlight the need for size-friendly, trauma-informed healthcare!

What is size-friendly healthcare?

Size-friendly care is a healthcare approach that aims to treat individuals of all body sizes with respect, dignity, and understanding while providing appropriate and effective care. It seeks to challenge and eliminate weight stigma and discrimination in healthcare settings.

In implementing this approach, healthcare providers treat individuals of all sizes with respect and dignity, addressing their health concerns without immediately attributing everything to weight.

What is trauma-informed healthcare?

Trauma-informed healthcare is a care approach that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and aims to actively prevent re-traumatization.

This approach acknowledges that traumatic experiences can leave enduring impacts on a person’s physical, mental, and emotional health. For care providers, this means recognizing the signs and symptoms of trauma in patients while supporting their healthcare needs.

Why do we need size-friendly trauma-informed healthcare?

When care providers adopt a size-friendly, trauma-informed approach, they improve patient care in numerous ways.

Patients feel heard, respected, and understood, which enhances their relationship with care providers. Therefore, promoting better communication, leading to more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans. And when patients feel safe and respected, they are more likely to seek help and follow treatment plans.

By offering an environment free from judgment and stigma and equipped to understand and address trauma, more individuals feel encouraged to seek the care they need.

This inclusion leads to a more equitable healthcare landscape, allowing everyone to receive the care they deserve!

What is Health At Every Size®?

Health at Every Size® (HAES®), the Association for Size, Diversity, and Health branded trademark, promotes weight-neutral health.

This approach emphasizes that health-supportive behaviors are more beneficial and less risky than weight loss attempts. HAES® advocates for individual health and a world free from barriers, where everyone has access to healthcare.

It focuses on combating social issues like racism instead of focusing solely on individual responsibility. This evidence-based movement aims to enhance access to health and healthcare, addressing social determinants of health and challenging the current focus on weight as a public health issue.

My doctor tells me I need to lose weight for my health, but I don’t know if he’s right.

Research, often funded by the weight loss industry, suggests a correlation between higher weight and certain health issues. However, assuming that weight is solely to blame for these issues is an oversimplification and not scientifically sound.

Correlation does not imply causation, and it’s important to consider confounding variables.

As a responsible researcher, you would explore other factors that could contribute to or cause the health issue observed in higher-weight individuals. For instance, improper blood pressure measurement techniques or the effects of weight stigma and weight cycling (yo-yo dieting) are also correlated with these health issues.

Unfortunately, many studies overlook or fail to control crucial factors such as testing bias, weight stigma, weight cycling, and healthcare disparities. Consequently, these studies inaccurately promote weight loss as the sole solution.

How can I overcome my deeply ingrained belief that weight loss is necessary for me?

The research, spanning over 100 years, consistently demonstrates the failure of intentional weight loss. Studies reveal that most individuals who attempt intentional weight loss regain the weight in the long term.

The weight loss industry capitalizes on this cycle, taking credit for initial weight loss while shifting blame to individuals for regaining the weight.

Our bodies have a biological response to weight loss, where metabolism slows down, hunger signals increase, fullness signals decrease, and type two muscle is lost. This physiological adaptation turns the body into a weight-regaining machine.

Weight cycling, the repeated loss and regain of weight, is not benign and is linked to increased inflammation, mortality, and health issues associated with body size.

Additionally, weight stigma is a real and pervasive issue, affecting every aspect of a person’s life. The belief that stigmatized individuals should change themselves to escape discrimination is inherently wrong.

Loving oneself cannot overcome systemic oppression, and fighting weight stigma on behalf of our bodies is a more productive approach.

What about if my mobility is being impacted by my weight?

When addressing mobility, it’s crucial to acknowledge the reality of ableism and the intersectionality of multiple marginalized identities.

It’s important to recognize the complexities involved and not gloss over them when aiming to cultivate a healthy and peaceful relationship with our bodies. Barriers, such as difficulty finding suitable mobility devices with higher weight limits or increased costs, further compound the challenges.

In terms of increasing mobility, considering the evidence-based approach can be helpful. One option to explore is starting with a mobility device, such as a scooter if needed. It’s unfortunate that mobility devices are often stigmatized as a last resort. This contributs to internalized ableism and the fear of encountering ableism from others.

By focusing on immediate solutions, like finding a device that enhances mobility and allows for activities with loved ones, the path towards improved mobility can be initiated without reliance on weight loss.

It’s common for people to believe that weight loss is necessary for health or improved mobility. However, statistically, attempting weight loss yields a 95% chance of short-term weight loss. Followed by long-term weight regain, with up to a 66% chance of gaining back more weight than initially lost.

As Ragen Chastain says, if body size is viewed as the problem, attempting weight loss is statistically the least effective solution and often leads to weight gain.

The encouraging news is that regardless of body size, individuals can work on aspects such as strength, flexibility, and stamina. Thin people can also experience similar mobility challenges, demonstrating that weight loss is not the only path to improvement.

Even if weight contributes to mobility issues, it doesn’t make weight loss any more likely to succeed.

Everyone is talking about weight loss drugs, and I don’t know if I should believe the hype.

Individuals have body autonomy and can make choices regarding their bodies, such as dyeing hair or trying diet drugs. However, being informed about the research surrounding these choices is essential.

Regarding weight loss drugs, one example is liraglutide (Victoza or Saxenda), initially approved for diabetes treatment. The weight loss industry uses research that correlates higher weight with health issues to justify these drugs’ risks and side effects.

Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of liraglutide, has a history of aggressive marketing and price gouging on insulin.

The drugs may benefit diabetes control. But it has a boxed warning for risks such as thyroid tumors and organ damage. Common side effects include gastrointestinal distress. While short-term weight loss occurs, it often accompanies flu-like symptoms.

Long-term studies show weight regain, with people losing two-thirds of their initial cardio-metabolic benefits within a year of stopping the drug. Novo Nordisk’s profit-oriented solution involves lifelong drug dependence.

The Obesity Action Coalition and The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) receive funding from Novo Nordisk. This raises concerns about conflicts of interest, espically with the recent AAP guidelines endorsing weight loss drugs.

It’s essential to recognize financial interests and understand the risks and limitations of weight loss medications.

Is the AAP’s push for weight loss medication and surgery for children an evidence-based recommendation?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) practice guidelines include health and behavioral lifestyle treatment starting at two years old, weight loss drugs at 12, and surgeries at 13. However, a closer examination reveals major flaws in their approach, and cited research fails to support their recommendations!

Most of the studies they reference are conducted on adults, not children. The surgical recommendations for children are based on a small number of kids. And most studies use data from the same 81 children.

The potential eating disorder symptoms caused by restriction, frequent weighing, and the side effects of drugs and surgeries are alarming. It’s absurd to claim that pediatric weight management programs decrease eating disorder risk. Many reputable eating disorder organizations have voiced opposition to these guidelines.

Parents facing these guidelines may find it helpful to request literature for review, or consider a second opinion. They can do this before making any decisions. Explicitly stating not to discuss weight or BMI in front of their child can protect them from potential shaming.

When discussing weight loss surgery, it’s essential to recognize that these interventions turn a healthy functioning digestive system into a lifelong disease state.

Understanding the limitations and potential risks associated with intentional weight loss is crucial. It highlights the importance of examining research, questioning societal norms and stigmas, and advocating for body autonomy and respect.

It’s hard to know where to begin when having the desire to learn about wellness rather than only focusing on weight loss.

Ashantis Jones takes an intersectional approach to wellness by blending her background in education, counseling, mental health, and fitness.

She addresses how parts of our identity come from our sexual orientation, gender identity, racial background, cultural background, and possible religious beliefs. And all of these things impact how we view and pursue wellness.

Learn about intersectional wellness and how to see health beyond one number on the scale. You’ll gain a new view of wellness and be inspired to approach it in a different light!

What is intersectional wellness?

While the fitness industry focuses on physical health, intersectional wellness digs deeper by looking at how racism, sexism, capitalism, and mental health affect an individual’s overall health.

Ashantis explains, “White supremacy is the really big umbrella. And then you take that smaller, you get to capitalism, and then you take that smaller, and you’ll see the diet culture industry, right, the idea that that also comes from the patriarchy because we need to be able to control women’s bodies. All of these things tie back to food because when you think about it, every culture has, you know, food that is specific to their culture, and that really makes them feel connected to their culture.”

For example, the diet industry has conditioned us to believe that rice is “bad” and quinoa is a superfood, but rice is a staple in many cultures. It’s also affordable and filling.

“Quinoa is great if you like the taste of quinoa, but if you like the taste of rice, get the rice. Because the only reason we’re being told it’s bad is because there’s a little sprinkle of racism in there.”

How can I learn about wellness in a body-positive way?

Wellness and Mental Health

The mind and body are interconnected.

As Ashantis says, “What a thought for us to focus on how we can improve mental health with physical but then also create a very loving relationship between the two.

A lot of times, people will work out of this place of shame or guilt. And if that’s all you’re thinking about while you’re doing the activity, then your brain is receiving that and saying, This is bad. So now you don’t want to work out because your brain actually thinks it’s bad.

Why are we treating our bodies with hate?”

Your mental health impacts your physical wellness, so if you need support, from medication to therapy, know you’re not alone.

Nutrition

We can learn a lot from babies as they know how to eat intuitively and will stop when they are full.

“Babies wean themselves off, and they’re like, okay, I’m done – I’m full. At some point, we start putting all of these structures in place around food. And it makes us completely just rewire from what our body’s intuition is.”

So, how can we relearn how to eat intuitively? Ashantis highly recommends the Intuitive Eating Handbook as a great first step.

Physical Activity

Find movement that invigorates you, from walking to strength training or just dancing in the kitchen with your kids.

“You just start where it feels comfortable. And just slowly move from there. And remember that it’s about getting the endorphins. It’s about the experience that comes from being able to enjoy your body in this way.”

So think about what form of movement brings you happiness and slowly integrate it into your life.

How can I be consistent with wellness?

Especially around the first of the year, people take an all-or-nothing approach to wellness and then feel guilty when they aren’t consistent.

Ashantis encourages people to question where that guilt comes from. For example, if you’re feeling guilty because of a promise you made to someone else about your wellness – remember that it’s your body! You get to choose what you do and don’t want to do with your body.

And remember there’s always tomorrow!

“You’re not always working towards consistency. Sometimes we’re working towards sustainability.”

Cara, known as Pale Ginger Pear on Instagram, shares her lipedema surgery before and after story.

She spent years fighting for answers and care for her lymphedema and lipedema. Finally, Cara connected with a compassionate surgeon who changed her life forever.

Now, she’s telling her story to raise awareness and help others get support.

Lipedema Surgery Before And After

Before sharing Cara’s story, it’s important to understand lipedema and how it differs from lymphedema.

Is lipedema and lymphedema the same thing?

Lymphedema is a condition that involves the accumulation of fluid in the tissues.

Lipedema is characterized by excess fat deposition in the legs, ankles, and other body parts.

Both conditions can cause swelling but have different causes and require unique treatments.

What is lipedema?

Lipedema typically affects people assigned female at birth and is thought to be caused by hormonal imbalances or genetic factors. Excess fat is deposited in the legs and ankles, often resulting in swelling and a characteristic “pear-shaped” appearance.

As Cara shares in her story, there’s often a misdiagnosis of obesity or lymphedema. So, it’s critical to advocate for a diagnosis and not allow care providers to dismiss your medical concerns by just telling you to lose weight.

What causes lipedema?

The cause of lipedema is unknown, but it is thought to be related to genetic factors or an imbalance between estrogen levels and fat metabolism. Also, having a high BMI or prolonged standing, which increases pressure on the legs, may also cause lipedema.

The effects of lipedema include pain, discomfort, bruising, redness in the legs, night cramps due to decreased blood flow to tissues caused by increased fat deposits around major vessels.

These can lead to reduced mobility and quality of life for those who suffer from it.

What are the common symptoms of lipedema?

Swelling of Legs and Arms

Hard Lumps or Masses Under the Skin

Pain and Difficulty Moving

How to manage lipedema?

There is no cure for lipedema, but there are several ways to manage the condition and improve symptoms. These may include:

Diet and Exercise

A balanced diet and regular physical activity can help reduce the severity of lipedema.

Compression Therapy

Wearing compression garments can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the affected areas.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)

MLD is a massage technique that helps improve lymph fluid circulation and reduce swelling in the affected areas.

Lipedema Surgery

In some cases, liposuction may help remove excess fat from the affected areas along with other surgeries.

Pain Management

Over-the-counter or pain medication may help manage pain.

While you’ll hear Cara share her care plan with compression therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, and lipedema surgery, each person’s treatment plan is unique.

Can lipedema be removed with surgery?

While lipedema surgery can help remove nodules and change the body’s contours, it is not a cure for lipedema. The condition may recur if the patient gains weight or becomes pregnant.

Commonly, lipedema surgery is a procedure that removes excess fat deposits from the body using a hollow metal tube called a cannula.

The surgeon will evaluate the patient’s overall health, assess the severity of the lipedema, and discuss the patient’s goals for the surgery.

Some providers manually extract nodules, and others, like Cara’s surgeon, do additional surgical procedures like a tummy tuck.

Lipedema Surgery Before And After Photos

Cara’s Lipedema Surgery Story

As Cara discusses in her advocacy work, lipedema impacts one in nine women. That’s the same statistic as breast cancer, yet there’s no comparison with the amount of public education and funding breast cancer receives compared to lipedema.

Getting Diagnosed with Lipedema

Looking back, Cara thinks she started developing lipedema around eight or nine.

Cara had an injury to her left leg during her senior year of high school and developed lymphedema.

During her pregnancy with her son, she finally received a lymphedema diagnosis and treatment around eight years later.

But it didn’t come easy; she had to fight with her primary care physician. Cara shares, “The PCP that I saw at the time told me that I was just fat, and I said, one leg fatter than the other.”

Cara pushed for a referral to a lymphedema wrapping clinic, and when she went into the clinic, she was the worst they had ever seen. So, she immediately received treatment for lymphedema and started wearing compression garments.

Four years passed, and a physical therapist told her she also had lipedema when she went for a new compression wrap. At that moment, so many puzzle pieces started to come together, from having a pear-shaped body to her inability to lose weight.

While Cara believes she started developing lipedema before puberty, it wasn’t until she was thirty that someone mentioned her condition. And it was at this time that she started sharing her story via Instagram.

By connecting with others online who had lymphedema and lipedema, Cara learned about surgical options.

Getting Lipedema Surgery

In 2019, Cara went to a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon’s office, hoping to get more answers and a care plan. There she met with Dr. Jamie, who changed her life forever.

When Dr. Jamie examined Cara, he was immensely concerned, “He was like, but your ankle cuffing is so bad. I’m afraid you’re gonna lose like your mobility and sensation in your feet.”

He immediately started drawing up a treatment plan, but as Cara told him, she was a broke single mom from Pennsylvania and didn’t have the means for surgery.

Lucky for her, Dr. Jamie was working on a documentary and asked Cara if she’d be interested in sharing her story.

Cara was already talking openly about her condition on Instagram. So, this seemed like a fantastic opportunity to get the surgeries and further her advocacy work.

To date, Cara has had six surgeries, and she shares her lipedema surgery before and after story during episode 190 of the Plus Mommy Podcast.

300 Pounds And Running

In 2012, Martinus worked long hours on his feet selling suits. One day he walked into work and felt a sharp pain in his hip. He could hardly put weight on it.

He went to multiple doctors searching for an answer to his pain.

Finally, a doctor said he knew why Martinus was hurting.

“And I’m like, You know why? Like, is it because of a previous football injury? Because I played football in high school in college. What is it? He’s like, you’re fat. And I’m like, What?”

An argument ensued.

“I’m like, I’m gonna run a marathon. And he laughs. He’s like, you know, that’s the most dumbest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. And if you run a marathon, you’re gonna die.

This lit a fire under Martinus, and he decided on the drive home that he was going to run a marathon…that very day!

Soon he found himself falling off the treadmill for setting the speed too fast.

But he got back up.

And for the next 18 weeks, Martinus got on that treadmill until he could RUN a 5K!

And he has been running ever since.

Meg Boggs went from creating content exploring motherhood and self-love to stepping into her authentic self as an athlete. With the highly-anticipated launch of her first book, Fitness for Every Body: Strong, Confident, and Empowered at Any Size, Meg helps people worldwide to find their inner athlete.

This is her story!

In November of 2017, Megg Boggs started a blog to share her birth story with close friends and family.

She never imagined she would become an athlete, author, and highly sought-after Instagram influencer with hundreds of thousands of followers.

In the beginning, Meg wanted to set a good example for her daughter by learning to love and appreciate herself.

Meg starting sharing images of her exposed postpartum belly, and began speaking openly about her struggles with mental health.

Because of that, major parenting sites displayed Meg’s images all over social media. Meg grew a loyal community by never shying away from the tough motherhood topics!

In January of 2018, she started powerlifting and immediately felt like she had unlocked something within herself.

To Meg’s surprise, her powerlifting and exercise content continued to receive a ton of traction!

Related: Champion Powerlifter Becci Holcomb Shares Her Pregnancy & Birth Story

She worked hard to move away from diet culture and break a life-long connection between fitness and weight loss. Above all, Meg knew dieting impacted her mental health.

Meg started noticing the traction her powerlifting content received and asked her community if they wanted to see more. To her great surprise, they did!

Subsequently, the more she shared, the more her community grew.

Unfortunately, she found her content stolen by people using her body to sell weight-loss products. In addition, Meg could not escape from countless fat-shaming comments and private messages.

To this day, she looks out for her mental wellness by journaling and taking short breaks from social media as needed.

In January of 2020, Meg attended an event Under Armor put on for athletes and influencers.

Immediately, Meg noticed she was the only plus size athlete. However, she still decided to go all-in and give the experience her everything.

Thankfully, everyone made her feel like she belonged here, and Meg made wonderful connections. Not only that, she spoke up about the lack in plus size clothing options, and Under Armor listened.

That experience changed her!

After that experience, Meg returned home and added athlete to her bio.

A few months later, she wrote her book, Fitness for Every Body: Strong, Confident, and Empowered at Any Size.
