Doula Kaytee Crawford is an educator, lactation consultant, craniosacral therapist, and birth and postpartum doula. She brings her skills and education to social media to help raise awareness and improve outcomes for birthing people.

In addition, she’s incredibly passionate about supporting Black and plus size individuals.

Kaytee’s journey to becoming Doula Kaytee began following a traumatic birth with her third child.

As she researched becoming a doula, she learned about the maternal death rate for Black people during childbirth. She realized she couldn’t sit there and do nothing. Kaytee didn’t want people to go through what she did.

Plus Size Pregnancy and Birth Doula Support

For Doula Kaytee, her passion is educating and holding space for the birthing person and their partner.

As well as being an extra needed set of eyes, “The person having the baby is focused on having the baby. The partner or support person is focused on the person having the baby. And so they are not always listening to what’s going around, and sometimes there are red flags happening.”

She tells her clients if they hear her asking the care provider or staff a question, she almost always knows the answer. But she’s asking to help bring awareness to things happening without the patient’s full informed consent.

So, by asking a question, Kaytee helps the birth professional slow down and address what’s occurring. And it should be the standard of care, but that’s often not the case in maternity care.

As you can tell by this one example, doulas do much more than help someone cope with labor!

She wants plus size people to know they shouldn’t be classified as high-risk based only on their BMI. And if your care provider tells you that you’re high-risk based only on your size, find a new care provider!

During fetal monitoring, Doula Kaytee recommends the Monica Novii wireless monitor for people in larger bodies. And if that’s not available, advocate for the nursing staff to use extra bands. She has seen people stretching out the monitor bands so tightly that it causes discomfort.

Kaytee reminds people they don’t need to be weighed at every appointment if that makes them uncomfortable.

Speaking of weight, if you have hyperemesis during pregnancy which is extreme morning sickness, make sure your care providers take it seriously. Sadly, many people of size are “congratulated” on weight loss rather than getting medical care.

As Kaytee says, “you need to get a good care team together to work toward the things you want for your birth.”

Postpartum Doula Support

For postpartum, Kayee highly recommends items that can make your life easier, from a grabber to a shower stool. She also encourages people to use the larger bathroom stall if they need more room to care for themselves.

As a lactation consultant, Kaytee says, “there’s no shame in the prop game,” as using lots of pillows helps greatly with positioning, especially if you have a large chest.

Babywearing is a real passion for Doula Kaytee, as she has been babywearing for over a decade.

Kaytee enjoys sharing different ways you can use babywearing wraps. For example, as a belly wrap for postpartum!

She wants everyone to remember, “your baby was made for your body, no matter what size body you have!” It’s a strong reminder that babywearing is for bodies of all sizes, and many wraps and carriers are size-friendly.

Tip From A Size-Friendly Lactation Consultant

Ana Hill is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with a background in birth. Since 2012, she has served families in Southeast Denver, Colorado, and online as an IBCLC. Ana is also a skilled doula trainer and educator.

Preparing To Breastfeed

Studies show one critical thing to support lactation is to take a class.

Becoming educated allows you to prepare for what you might need along your bodyfeeding journey. An example is how much privacy you may want while feeding your baby.

Speaking of privacy, consider wearing layers while nursing. Having a tank top under a shirt means you don’t need to worry about exposing your belly.

You can also get some privacy while nursing your baby in a carrier. Thankfully there are many plus size babywearing carriers and wraps available.

If possible, work with a doula! They will support you and help connect you with size-friendly birth and lactation providers.

Consider reaching out to an IBCLC during pregnancy for a prenatal appointment to create a plan for success. This support is especially encouraged for parents with PCOS, gestational diabetes, planning for cesarean birth, or people who have struggled with breastfeeding in the past.

How Birth Impacts Breastfeeding

One of the biggest things we don’t talk about is the impact of IV fluids on breastfeeding.

Fluids tend to delay milk production, and people should be aware that this can occur. There is a study that looks at delayed milk production for plus size people. Ana questions how many people in the study had interventions and IV fluids.

In Ana’s experience, she sees a delay in milk production for people of all sizes when there are IV fluids.

Breastfeeding Tips

Ana emphasizes the importance of seeking help as early as possible with someone trained in lactation.

When it comes to feeding positions, you don’t need to sit up when nursing. Instead, lean back (45-degree angle or further back) and use pillows to help to make your body more comfortable. By doing so, your baby uses their natural feeding reflexes, and you’ll likely be more comfortable.

It can also be helpful to roll up a small hand towel to tuck under your breast to lift it.

Being able to relax is key!

You’ll also want to set yourself up for pumping by ensuring the flange is the correct size and selecting a pump that will meet your needs.

There’s a lot of misinformation and societal beliefs about larger bodies. As Ana points out, when people are busy doubting themselves, it can impact their feeding journey. She encourages people to hold onto the idea that their bodies are amazing just the way they are today!

Tips For Birth Professionals

For birth professionals who support plus size parents, it’s so important to affirm people’s bodies!

Don’t delay a referral to an IBCLC if your client is struggling with bodyfeeding. We all need to stay in our wheelhouse and know our area of expertise. And when referrals are needed, make sure you’re recommending someone who is size-friendly.

For doulas, if your client has a complicated birth, be sure to refer out to an IBCLC early on if any lactation issues arise.

It’s important to understand the unique benefits and different levels of expertise of breastfeeding peer counselors, lactation educators, and IBCLCs.

Listen below as Ana shares even more bodyfeeding tips for families and birth professionals.

In April of 2011, I started writing a plus size pregnancy blog.

I didn’t know what I was doing at the time. All I knew was that I felt compelled to tell my story. A story of a plus size woman who had a healthy outcome.

When I was pregnant, I Googled “plus size pregnancy” quite a few times. My search results were full of negative information and heartbreaking stories.

I wanted plus size people to know it is absolutely possible to have positive outcomes!

There were so many resources I spent hours searching for, and I wanted to develop that content. I started writing articles full of tips for plus size maternity clothes and how to connect with size-friendly healthcare providers.

I never could’ve imagined that I’d go on to develop the leading plus size pregnancy resource with nearly 6.5 million pageviews and counting!

At the age of 17, Kasey experienced an ectopic pregnancy that ruptured. She lost one fallopian tube and an ovary. She was a high school student at the time and decided to keep her loss a secret. Kasey shares her story of pregnancy after ectopic pregnancy and the pain of holding onto secrets, we shouldn’t have to keep.

Before we go into Kasey’s story, below are somethings you should know about ectopic pregnancy.

What Is An Ectopic Pregnancy?

Ectopic pregnancy is when the egg attaches somewhere outside the uterus, and this can happen inside a fallopian tube.

Sadly, pregnancy is not viable if this occurs. The growing tissue can cause life-threatening bleeding if left untreated.

What Are The Symptoms Of An Ectopic Pregnancy?

As the fertilized egg grows many people start experiencing light vaginal bleeding a pelvic pain.

If the ectopic pregnancy is located in a fallopian tube, it can cause the tube to rupture.

Call your care provider with any medical concerns but seek emergency medical help if you have severe pain and bleeding. As well as lightheadedness and shoulder pain.

Stigma Surrounding Ectopic Pregnancy

Like miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy has a stigma surrounding it as people aren’t sure how to comfort those who have experienced a loss.

Sometimes people say things that can be emotionally damaging, and it’s critical to reach out for support if you’re struggling.

Pregnancy After Ectopic Pregnancy

If a previous ectopic pregnancy resulted in the loss of a portion of a person’s reproductive system, it could make pregnancy after ectopic pregnancy challenging.

Some people require support from a fertility specialist to get pregnant with treatments like IUI or IVF.

Unfortunately, having a previous ectopic pregnancy increases your risk of having another ectopic pregnancy. So it’s critical to be in close contact with your care provider and be aware of signs to look for that may indicate another medical emergency.

Kasey’s Pregnancy After Ectopic Pregnancy Story

A few days after Kasey found out she was unexpectedly pregnant, she started experiencing horrific pain while at high school in theater class.

Kasey was 17 and having an ectopic pregnancy. Sadly it ruptured, and she lots a tube and ovary at such a young age.

Following surgery, Kacey’s mom asked her if she wanted to tell people what happened or not.

Kacey decided to keep her loss a secret. She pushed her emotions deep down and didn’t even tell her siblings until years later.

As she got older, she would occasionally share her story, and the responses weren’t always supportive. People downplayed the trauma of her loss because she was so early along in her pregnancy. That was extremely painful.

Pregnancy After Ectopic Pregnancy

Ten years following Kasey’s loss, she was married and thinking about starting a family. Her husband, Shawn, was aware of her past and was incredibly supportive.

Kasey got off birth control, and they started trying to conceive with the support of a fat-friendly care provider.

Kasey decided if she didn’t get pregnant on her own, she and Shawn would adopt.

Her journey to conception after ectopic pregnancy was kept a secret, as she didn’t want pressure from loved ones.

After trying for nearly a year, Kasey asked her care provider to run some tests to evaluate her fertility. She didn’t want to have an IUI or IVF, but was open to getting some support that wasn’t as invasive.

Her care provider recommended doing blood work to test Kasey’s fertility after an ectopic pregnancy with the loss of one tube and ovary.

While running tests with her care provider and looking into adoption agencies, Kasey got the shock of her life finding out she was pregnant!

She surprised her husband with the wonderful news.

Related: Powerful Conversation About Plus Size Pregnancy With An OB-GYN

While Kasey was thrilled, she had a challenging time connecting to her pregnancy early on. She was terrified of another loss.

Her care providers were proactive and ran bloodwork right away – everything pointed to a viable pregnancy!

Her pregnancy was easy, but for Kasey, that made it even harder as she didn’t have morning sickness or the usual aches and pains most people talk about during pregnancy.

She was also experiencing a plus size pregnancy, so it often takes longer to show and feel movement.

At 22 weeks, she finally felt her son move inside her for the first time! She also started showing.

Kasey shared her frustrations of searching for plus size maternity clothes and found luck joining Facebook groups.

A friend encouraged her to take bump photos to help her embrace pregnancy.

Childbirth After Ectopic Pregnancy

Near the end of Kasey’s pregnancy, around 38 weeks, her blood pressure started to rise. There were concerns that she’d develop preeclampsia.

Kasey wanted to go into labor on her own and have an unmedicated birth.

She went on leave from work and started trying all the natural induction methods from eating dates to having sex.

Her water broke the day before her scheduled induction!

She labored at home for a while and then headed to the hospital an hour away from her home.

Her hospital room wasn’t ready right away, so she started walking around the hospital, and her contractions immediately got stronger.

She was only 3 cm when they arrived at the hospital. After her walk, everything progressed quickly!

Kasey’s mantra was, “I can do anything for a minute,” as she labored.

Forty-five minutes later, things became increasingly intense as she had progressed to 7 cm.

Ten minutes later, she was 9 cm! Her labor went by so fast in only six hours.

Kasey asked for some support with pain management, and then she was able to start pushing.

With encouragement from her husband, she was ready to meet her son.

About five contractions later, Llewyn was born!

Listen to episode 112 of the Plus Mommy Podcast, where Kasey tells her full pregnancy after ectopic pregnancy story.

You’ll also hear a special message Kasey shares with other loss families – don’t keep it a secret. Do whatever you need to do to process through the trauma of the loss!

My name is Kasey Thomas, and I live in Pennsylvania with my husband Shawn, two cats, and, most recently, our son Llewyn.

Shawn and I met when we were both Corrections Officers at a local County Prison in 2012. Shawn still works as a Corrections Officer, but I am now employed through the Treatment Department at the County Community Corrections Center (work release) as the Employment Case Manager. I am the youngest of 4 children (two sisters and a twin brother) having been raised by a single mother.

When I was about 17, I had an ectopic pregnancy, and it took me years to be able to come to terms with that and be able to discuss it. Shawn and I wanted to wait until our first wedding anniversary to try for a baby, and 12 months after starting to try, I was pregnant! I gave birth at age 29 on 5/16/19.

On Sunday, September 15th, 2019, life as my family knew it turned upside-down after my husband and son were involved in a horrible car accident.

I needed something good to come out of a terrible situation. So I went onto Facebook and Instagram to talk about booster safety. If it wasn’t for my son being properly secured, he could’ve been far more injured or worse. A Facebook post I wrote went viral with a reach of over one million and got picked up by major media outlets from People to Good Morning America.

My Family’s Story About Booster Safety

My husband, Chris, and I will forever be thankful we never budged on booster safety!

Starting last year in 3rd grade, our son Braeden would tell us names of friends who no longer used a booster seat. Braeden put the pressure on us even harder this year now that he’s nine.

Braeden was secured correctly in his booster, on September 15th, when out of nowhere, an SUV ran a red light, and my husband t-boned them.

When I received the call from my husband I was at home. I could immediately tell something was wrong. He said they were just in a car accident down the street from our home. He thought they were okay, but told me the car wasn’t.

I didn’t realize how major of an accident it was, and that my husband wasn’t okay until I arrived on the scene to see fire trucks and ambulances had already arrived. Unable to pull up to the scene, I pulled into a parking lot and ran!

At first, I couldn’t see my son, and I screamed out, “Where’s Braeden?!”

When I finally saw him, he was covered in something red – I must’ve looked like I was going into shock because multiple people screamed out that it was a drink.

Braeden was holding a red Slurpee that spilled all over him and the backseat when the accident occurred.

My husband and son were seated on the curb, surrounded by paramedics.

Then I turned my head to see the car, and my heart stopped. It was worse than I could’ve imagined.

My boys were moved to the ambulance to be evaluated, and I tried to process everything that was happening.

The paramedics said how they don’t often see kids my son’s size doing so well after an accident like this. They said he would’ve been far more injured had he not been in a booster. The paramedics praised my husband and me for using a booster.

We left the scene of the accident after I asked a police officer if the people in the SUV were okay – he told me they were. Then we spent hours in the emergency room as our family joined, and my dear friend Brianna brought us a care package.

My son’s chest and neck bruising clearly show how the booster kept my son at the appropriate height. Had he not been in a booster, the seatbelt would’ve been at his neck and face.

Things could’ve been so much worse, and while my son is doing well, my husband has a road to recovery.

Related: Plus Size Babywearing Q&A

Braeden told his pediatrician during our follow-up visit from the emergency room, “My moms says I have to be in a booster until college now, and I’m not happy about it.”

His pediatrician and I laughed. We both told him he’d be tall enough long before college, but we need to wait until he’s safe.

Braeden’s pediatrician talked about how she has treated kids with neck and spine injuries from not being adequately secured in a booster. She also warned against putting kids in the front seat too soon as airbag injuries can be terrible.

I keep telling Braeden that cool kids are safe kids! He now agrees and doesn’t complain at all getting into my car in his booster.

I wanted some good to come from this terrible accident.

We need more awareness of how vital boosters are for bigger kids – even if they don’t think they are cool! It’s incredible knowing that my Facebook post has reached over one million people with over 7,000 shares.

I’ve heard from close friends to strangers about how they are putting their bigger kids into boosters, and that makes my heart so happy.

Related: Raising Body Positive Kids

On social media, I’ve read many comments from people sharing how they were considering removing their kid from their booster. After hearing our story, they will keep their kids in a booster until they meet all the safety requirements.

My parents also want to make sure grandparents hear this message loud and clear too. They didn’t mind buying our son a booster for their car but thought we were a bit extreme. Now they are so thankful and are telling everyone they know who has kids and grandkids about booster safety.

My family is so grateful our story is making an impact and appreciate everyone who has kept us in their thoughts!

During episode 72 of the Plus Mommy Podcast, I share the story of my family’s terrible car accident, why I spoke up about booster safety, and how that message has gone viral. My nine-year-old son, Braeden, joins me briefly with a message for kids who don’t want to be in boosters. As Braeden says, “Cool kids can also be safe kids!”

During a recent trip to Disneyland, as a plus size mom, I realized how different it was to experience Disney with a larger body.

Disneyland rides for obese people* can be challenging but no one talks about it.

There are many Disneyland and California Adventure attractions that are not designed with plus size people in mind.

I invited my friend Sam Reyes, a self-proclaimed Disney Dork, to join me in covering all things Disneyland for plus size guests.

*As plus size women who love Disneyland, we don’t like the o-word, but we really want people to find this resource. The phrase “Disneyland rides for obese people” matches the words people are searching to find this information. The good news – you won’t see the o-word again in this article! Thanks for understanding.

Disney magic is accessible to people of all sizes and ages. You just have to be a little strategic when you’re visiting Disneyland, as a person of size.

It’s our hope that the insights shared here, from preparing for your day to discussing what rides we absolutely love, will help you to plan your next trip to Disneyland and California Adventure, in Anaheim, California.

Traveling To Disneyland When You’re Plus Size

When you’re plus size, travel can put more wear on your body.

Some people experience extreme swelling after travel and that can make walking Disneyland for hours even more difficult. This is something to keep in mind while planning your trip!

Consider building in downtime between travel and your Disney adventures, if you’re able, as well as, purchasing plus size compression socks before your trip.

Southwest has great deals for flights, and they offer the Customer of Size policy that you can read all about via Flying While Fat.

Also, if you’re searching for a local hotel within walking distance of the park, the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel & Water Playground is a fantastic family-friendly location.

Disneyland Plus Sized Guests Parking Recommendations

Rather than going to the Disneyland parking structures, consider the Toy Story Parking Area located at 300 W. Katella Ave, Anaheim, CA 92802.

Once parked you’ll be able to walk a short distance to a shuttle bus that will drop you off in front of the entrance to Disneyland and California Adventure.

The shuttle bus allows for easy on and off for people of different sizes and abilities.

If you park in the Mickey & Friends or Pixar Pals Parking Structure (accessible via Disneyland Drive, Magic Way, and West Ball Road), you will take a tram to a drop-off area located close to the parks but not directly in front.

There’s wider seating on the ends of each tram, and the doors are also wider to get on and off.

Both parking options cost $25, and you can learn more here.

There’s also the Anaheim ART Shuttle for a small fee that drops you off right in front of the entrance of the parks. The ART Shuttle is ADA compliant, allows motorized scooters, onto the bus as well as, wheelchairs and strollers.

Disney Hotel Suggestions

Take a good look at hotel reviews and look for options that offer shuttles to Disneyland or ease access to ART Shuttles.

You can request weight limits for hotel beds, if you’re concerned.

Bonus! Look for hotels that offer free breakfast because the food at Disney parks can get pricey!

Speaking of Disneyland food options, if you have a food allergy like a gluten intolerance, both Disneyland and California Adventure are very accommodating.

Disneyland With Motorized Scooters

If you or someone in your group needs a motorized scooter, you can rent one from a local company or from Disneyland directly.

Most independent rental options will cost half as much as renting from Disneyland and they can drop-off and pick-up the scooter to your hotel.

Disneyland will charge your scooter for you, if the battery gets drained, so that’s one less thing for you to worry about.

Disneyland and California Adventure are mindful of the needs of people with different abilities and have this helpful resource, Services for Guests with Mobility Disabilities.

Tips To Avoiding Chafing

Lather up! MONISTAT Chafing Gel will be your best friend, as well as, other anti-chafing options for plus size people. You can read about these via Chub Rub Solutions.

Don’t forget to pack a stick of deodorant to refresh yourself with mid-day and apply lots of sunscreen throughout the day!

Shoes To Wear to Disneyland

Bring multiple pairs of shoes from comfortable tennis shoes to walking sandals!

By changing out your shoes throughout the day, you’ll be able to walk longer and further.

Plus, if you go on one of the water rides, you can wear sandals and protect your shoes from getting soaked.

Plus Size Disney Clothes

When it comes to picking out what you’re going to wear to Disneyland, there are some really cute plus size Disney clothes available!

Torrid has many adorable Disney options that go up to a size 30 like this plus size Minnie Mouse dress.

You can also find Disney plus size shirts on Amazon!

Here’s a fun Disney fact, Disneyland shirts that have a date on them, “65th Celebration,” for example, often go all the way up to 6XL inside of the park. You just need to ask a Cast Member for the larger sizes!

What To Wear To Disneyland As A Plus Size Guest

What’s most important is that you’re comfortable, so wearing Disney branding clothing sure isn’t a requirement.

From yoga pants, shorts, dresses with leggings, to jeans and a tank top — just wear whatever you think you’ll be comfy in walking for miles and getting on and off rides.

Be sure to bring layers as depending upon what time of year you go, the weather can fluctuate.

Consider packing backup clothes because you’ll likely get hot and sweaty throughout your Disney day. If nothing else pack an extra pair of underwear and consider wearing a plus size leak-proof pair.

Bring A Backpack

Suggestions of items to pack in your backpack for your day at Disneyland – snacks, water bottle, backup clothes (including an extra pair of socks and underwear), sunscreen, deodorant, any medication you might need, as well as, backup clothes and items for your kids.

Before Entering Disneyland or California Adventure As A Plus Sized Guest

Hydrate And Medicate

Bring a refillable water bottle, and be sure to drink plenty of water not just throughout the day but well before you arrive.

At every Disney concession area that offers fountain drinks, you can ask for free ice water. Note that Disneyland is cutting down on plastic so drinks don’t come with lids (you’ll need to ask for one).

Disneyland also has paper straws so if you prefer your own reusable straw don’t forget to put one in your backpack!

If you’re concerned about pain and inflammation, you can take something like ibuprofen (unless your doctor says otherwise).

You can also bring your own over-the-counter or prescription medicine into the park. Tylenol is available to purchase in the parks but it’s pricey compared to your local drug store.

While cannabis is legal for recreational and medical purchase in California, Disneyland does not allow it in any form on their property.

Disneyland App

Be sure to download the free Disneyland App before you enter the park. This way you’ll know how long the wait is for rides, see pathways throughout the park to help you get from land to land quicker, and seating areas.

Disneyland For Plus Sized Guests Guide

Below we’ll walk through every land in Disneyland and point out tips for what rides are or aren’t size-friendly.

Not every ride will be covered, but most are and you’ll learn a ton for planning a trip to Disneyland without having to worry about your size!

When the ADA entrance for attractions is mentioned that’s usually the attraction’s exit.

Don’t be afraid to approach a Disney Cast Member with questions or concerns throughout the day.

They’ve assisted people of all sizes and abilities. They are there to support you with compassion and help to make your day magical!

Most importantly, listen to your body throughout the day and sit down when you need to rest.

You need to do what’s best for you and try not to care what strangers may think. Your Disney day is all about you and your family!

Park Entrance

The turnstiles are wide but you can ask to have the gate, used for wheelchairs, scooters, and strollers, opened for you if you’d prefer.

Advocate for your needs and comfort from the start of your Disney day!

Speaking of turnstiles, if you’re unable to get through them anywhere at both parks, just ask a Cast Member for the ADA entrance and they’ll be happy to help you.

You’ll be able to get on the ride relatively soon if it’s not busy. If the ride has a long wait, the Cast Member might scan your ticket and provide you with a time to come back.

There are a few rides at Disneyland that have a turnstile in the middle of the line for the attraction, and we’ll point those out throughout this guide to Disneyland while plus size.

When it comes to rides with seat belts, most are extremely size-friendly! A helpful tip is to pull the seat belt all the way out and then sit down and it will tighten.

Main Street, U.S.A.

Main Street has many seating areas so stop and rest whenever you need a break and be sure to hit up City Hall if you have something special to celebrate.

As you’re walking along Main Street, be mindful of the tracks, as you don’t want to trip or roll your ankle. Disneyland has made great improvements but beware.

Disneyland Railroad

The Disneyland Railroad with stops on Main Street, New Orleans Square, Mickey’s Toontown and Tomorrowland, can be a helpful way to get around the park.

There are two different styles of trains. One train has rows of benches facing outward from the train.

This train is fun because you’re looking out onto the park throughout your ride. This seating design is also more size accommodating than the other train with the traditional rows of bench seats facing the front of the train.

Be sure to ask the Cast Member loading the train for the wider seating area, at the end of each train, as the train with rows facing the front can be a tight squeeze getting on and off.

Adventureland

Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room

The Tiki Room is a fantastic place to sit, with size-friendly benches, and air conditioning.

You can also bring food and drinks inside the Tiki Room. There’s an ADA ramp if you can’t walk up the stairs.

The Tiki Room was originally a restaurant so there’s a bathroom not many people know about. You can use it and hopefully there won’t be a long line!

Jungle Cruise

This Disney classic ride is great for the whole family and it’s size-friendly. The only problem is there’s a tight turnstile.

You can go to the ADA entrance if you have any concerns about fitting comfortably and let the Cast Member know you need to enter this way.

Indiana Jones

Indiana Jones is a ride with a tight turnstile in the middle of the very long line and a narrow stairwell.

If you can’t go up and down the stairs or have concerns about the turnstile, then just ask a Cast Member for the ADA entrance.

Once you get onto the ride, the seating area can be a bit snug but the seatbelt, like pretty much all seat belts at Disneyland and California Adventure, are very long.

New Orleans Square

Pirates of the Caribbean

This ride is completely size-friendly and family friendly! You can wear your baby on the ride if you like to babywear while plus size.

If you’re concerned about the slight incline in the line for the ride, you can go to the ADA entrance, as we’ve talked about before.

The Haunted Mansion

This is a size-friendly and family-friendly ride with an accommodating lap-bar.

You’ll need to get on and off a moving track but you can always ask a Cast Member to stop the track for you.

Note that this ride can be a little scary for young kids.

Critter Country

Splash Mountain

Like Indian Jones, Splash Mountain has some tight walkways but the ride itself is super size friendly!

Be prepared that they usually put larger passengers in the back. There’s no seat belt, just a log you step down into and sit on a bench.

You will get wet, so this ride is a great time to swap out your shoes to sandals, if you haven’t already and you brought an extra pair.

Frontierland

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder is a fun ride that is size-friendly with a pull-down bar.

Note that if you’re riding with a small child, you’ll want to put an arm around them as the bar will go down to accommodate you and leave a lot of room for the little one to bounce around.

The line has some tight squeezes including the walkway with stairs. You can go to the exit and get your ticket scanned for a time to come back and avoid waiting in line.

Throughout Frontierland, there are many seating areas.

Be sure to enjoy the Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia, as these attractions provide a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Disneyland.

Mickey’s Toontown

This is a fun land for kids to meet Mickey, Minnie, and other visiting characters. However, the rides are not size-friendly.

Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin

This can be a tight squeeze getting on and off the ride for someone beyond a size 22, depending upon how your weight is distributed. Once you’re on the ride it’s very roomie.

Gadget’s Go Coaster

This is not a size accommodating roller coaster at Disneyland.

Fantasyland

“It’s a Small World”

This Disney classic has tight turnstiles!

When you get up to the ride, let the cast member know you don’t want to go through the turnstiles. They’ll direct you to what side of the boat to get on so you don’t need to worry about the stairs and tight turnstile exit.

Storybook Land Canal Boats

While the canal boats might not look size-friendly they are, so give it a go! The boat is on a track so it won’t tip or take on water.

Matterhorn Bobsleds

The Matterhorn might be a fun ride, but it’s not a ride accessible to everyone.

The seatbelt is super big but getting in and out is the hard part. You have to do a deep squat and there isn’t anything to hold onto when you get out.

Character Rides

From Peter Pan’s Flight to Snow White’s Scary Adventures most of the other rides in Fantasyland are older.

Older Disney rides mean tight turnstiles and narrow paths throughout the lines!

It’s best to go to the ADA entrance if you have any concerns about fitting. Often you’ll need to wait there awhile to provide time for those who have waited in line to go and then you’ll get to go.

If the moving track needs to be stopped for you to get off and on, just ask.

These rides are super fun to go on with your kids so don’t feel like you need to skip them because of your size.

Just advocate for what you need during your day at Disney and go to the exit rather than the entrance, if you’re worried about the turnstiles.

Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough

If needed, there is an ADA pathway to get into the castle.

Tomorrowland

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue

While the seat belt is very accommodating, the seats have armrests that are not size-friendly.

Before boarding, you can ask a Cast Member for the ADA seat (front left side) with armrests that go up.

Space Mountain

It’s a tight squeeze with a pull-down lap bar. This is a ride that’s not very size-inclusive.

Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters

This ride is so much fun for the whole family and size-friendly with an accommodating lap-bar!

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

You have to go downstairs to get into the submarine and it can be a bit narrow for some people.

There is an ADA option where you sit on a bench in an air-conditioned room. This option is also great for anyone who gets claustrophobic.

Autopia

This is another ride where you have to get down really low and then get yourself back up.

While fun for the kids, it might not be right for you depending on your size.

Disneyland Monorail

The Monorail is a great way to get to Downtown Disney or just take a ride around the park. It’s accommodating for people of different sizes and abilities.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

While in Galaxy’s Edge, there’s so much to experience! The popular Star Wars land bar has plenty of size-friendly seating.

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run

This ride is a blast and unlike Star Tours the chairs are arm-free so very size-friendly and the seatbelt is very size-inclusive. Don’t skip this ride during your next trip to Disneyland!

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

The turnstiles and the door to get into Rise of the Resistance can be snug. Plus size riders recommend turning to the side for the turnstiles and entering the door but find the ride size-friendly overall.

Disneyland For Plus Sized Guests Guide – California Adventure

California Adventure opened in 2001 so all lines for the attractions are ADA compliant. This means you can get in line like all other guests and not have to worry about narrow paths, stairs or turnstiles in the middle of the line.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few rides in California Adventure that are not accommodating to people of size.

Hollywood Land

Hyperion Theater

This theater does not have any size-friendly seating.

If you’re aware of an update to the theater please let us know in the comment section. That also goes for anything else throughout this Disneyland for plus sized guests guide – please leave comments with your Disney while plus size tips!

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!

The seatbelt is extremely accommodating but the seat can be a bit snug. As you’re boarding, ask the Disney Cast Member for the larger seats as there are two on each elevator.

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!

You might need to step to the side as you enter and exit, due to the door having an odd shape, but it’s pretty size accommodating. This ride has a lap bar like the Buzz ride.

Animation Academy

This area of California Adventure is a must-do with or without kids. You can learn how to draw characters and other neat interactive activities. All areas are ADA accessible.

Cars Land

Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters

This ride is super fun and size inclusive.

Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree

A fun ride that spins around a bit so you might smooch into your fellow rider but it’s very size-inclusive.

Radiator Springs Racer

While the racecar is size-inclusive, you do have to get down low to get yourself in and out of the ride.

Unlike the Matterhorn, there’s something to hold onto to help pull you out of the ride.

Grizzly Peak

If you’re exploring Grizzly Peak with little kids, be sure to enjoy the Redwood Forest Playground with play structures and slides that are size-friendly!

Soarin’ Around the World

While the end seats are larger it can be a tight fit for someone over the size of 24 depending upon how they carry their weight.

Grizzly River Run

You’ll get soaked but have so much fun on this size-inclusive ride!

Pacific Wharf

The Pacific Wharf is a family-fun area with different things to do.

Paradise Gardens Park

Most of the rides in this area, like Jumpin’ Jellyfish and Goofy’s Sky School, are not size accommodating for larger guests.

The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure

This is one ride in Paradise Gardens Park that’s a super plus size friendly, easy get easy to get onto, ride. It’s on a moving track so just ask if you need it stopped.

Pixar Pier

Unlike Paradise Gardens Park, the rides in Pixar Pier are size-friendly including Incredicoaster!

Incredicoaster

It’s hard to find a roller coaster that larger people can go on but the Incredicoaster is size-friendly! There is a chest pull-down bar but it locks at your comfort.

Things To Do After Your Disney Day As A Plus Size Guest

Woohoo! You did it! Hopefully, you had a magical time and listened to your body’s needs throughout your day.

Hydrate, Medicate, And Elevate

You’re probably going to be pretty sore and tired after clocking in a few miles of walking.

Even though your Disney day is over, continue hydrating, and you might want to take an ibuprofen. Once you get to your hotel or home elevate and ice your feet.

It’s a good idea to shower off, but you sure won’t be judged if you just crawl into bed after spending a bit of time with your feet elevated.

Be Proud Of Yourself

Before you drift-off give yourself a big pat on the back for not only pushing your body but also any emotional obstacles you had to overcome.

You didn’t allow your size to hold you back from having a fun Disney day and that’s admirable!

Breastfeeding can be challenging regardless of your size, but plus size breastfeeding comes with additional obstacles. If you’re wondering how PCOS impacts breastfeeding or struggling to breastfeed with large breasts, this resource, with IBCLC Laurel Wilson is for you!

Plus Size Breastfeeding

IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and it’s the highest certification for lactation consultants. Studies show that support from an IBCLC can improve breastfeeding outcomes for people of size.

ILCA is one of the best ways to find an IBCLC in your area.

Breastfeeding looks different for everyone. Some people nurse with ease, while others pump and bottle-feed like we learned about during episode 14 of the Plus Mommy Podcast, Sam’s Plus Size Pregnancy And Breastfeeding Story.

“Don’t define your breastfeeding journey by amounts!” – Laurel Wilson, IBCLC

I found the words above incredibly healing as I struggled to breastfeed my son.

I wish I would’ve prepared for breastfeeding. Unexpectedly, I went into labor early with my breastfeeding book on my nightstand open to chapter two.

As Laurel shares, during our prenatal education, we focus heavily on preparing for birth. Birth only lasts 12 – 36 hours on average. So little time is spent preparing for breastfeeding when it can last years!

Without a doubt, it’s critical to have prenatal education for pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. We should just stop putting breastfeeding last and spend so little time becoming educated. I speak from experience so let’s go deeper with plus size nursing tips!

3 Ways To Prepare For Breastfeeding

1. Take A Breastfeeding Class

When you are pregnant and planning to breastfeed, Google “breastfeeding classes near me.” Look for a class that’s at least three hours long. Shorter classes won’t cover all you need to learn about nursing.

2. Read Breastfeeding Books

Laurel recommends Ina Mays’s Guide To Breastfeeding and Breastfeeding Made Simple.

3. Get Your Basic Hormonal Levels Tested

Early testing can help if you end up having hormonal challenges with breastfeeding. An IBCLC can recommend testing once you’ve had your baby and make some comparisons. Hormonal testing is especially beneficial for people who have PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).

When Will My Milk Come In?

When you are a person of size, it can take longer to lactate (Laurel explains why during the podcast episode linked below). For some, it can take an additional 24 – 48 hours. The best thing you can do is a lot of skin-to-skin with your baby!

One great clothing item you can wear is a nursing tank top. Tuck your baby into the top and do a lot of skin-to-skin while relaxing and recovering from childbirth.

Related: PCOS And Pregnancy: Megan’s Plus Size Pregnancy Story

PCOS And Breastfeeding

About 1/3 of people who have PCOS have significant struggles breastfeeding; from undersupply to oversupply. This is another reason why connecting with an IBCLC is so important!

One thing that helps is nutrition during breastfeeding. If you have PCOS, your body will crave sugar because of how it’s processing insulin.

Focus on foods that address the sweet cravings but also help to stabilize the insulin levels (yams, beets, raspberries, etc). A book recommendation is The New Glucose Revolution.

Breastfeeding Positions When You Have Large Breasts Or Are Plus Size

When it comes to plus size breastfeeding positions, there’s no perfection position aside from the position(s) that work best for you and your baby.

A laid back or reclined breastfeeding position can be helpful, but your breasts can fall to the side. To assist with breastfeeding lying down, Laurel recommends wearing a nursing tank top, nursing bra, or even a scarf around your neck to help sling your breasts in an upright position.

You can even breastfeed in a plus size baby carrier as you’ll see in this Instagram video from Plus Size Babywearing. View this post on Instagram

Plus Size Nursing Bras

You might be wondering when you should buy a plus size nursing bra?

Laurel says if you can wait until you’re six weeks postpartum, it’s ideal. However, if you have to buy a new bra during pregnancy, you might as well buy a nursing bra.

Consider placing one hand in your cup as that represents a cup size. This way, you’ll approximately buy the right size nursing bra for when your milk comes in.

With that said, your breast tissue will change over time, so even if your nursing bra fits at the beginning of your breastfeeding journey, it might not months-in.

A nursing wrap-sleep bra and nursing tank tops will accommodate your changing breast size and help you feel supported.

<img decoding="async" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B005THBC0G&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=plusizbir0e-20&language=en_US" alt="woman wearing a nursing wrap sleep bra

This pumping bra comes highly recommended by plus size moms.

As Cortney shares, the perfect carrier is the one that fits you best! One carrier might be your best friend’s favorite but not work for you. It’s ideal to try different styles of carriers until you find the one that’s perfect for you.

Thankfully more and more brands are size-friendly!

I started working as a doula in 2012, and shortly after that, worked in a retail store that sold baby carriers, among other things. While on staff there, a co-worker encouraged me to take the Center for Babywearing Studies introductory educator’s course. There I found a wealth of knowledge and a new sense of purpose that could go hand in hand with my doula work.

I enjoyed integrating babywearing group classes and private consultations into my work on the East Coast. However, when the time came to move, I dreamed of my home state of New Mexico. I was ready to take my babywearing education career and make it something more. Noticing a strong babywearing community, but a lack of network between spread out-groups, as well as gaps in accessibility and resource on many levels. I wanted to create a collaborative, culturally mindful, and fluid space, full of flexibility and growth together. Finally, the idea grew into a formal organization in 2015. I cannot wait to see where we go from here.

The stigma surrounding postpartum depression is lifting as moms open up about their experiences. A lesser-known postpartum mental health struggle about 10% of women face is postpartum anxiety.

Anna Hithersay, the host of The Post Party Podcast, joins the Plus Mommy Podcast to share her postpartum anxiety stories.

The first time Anna struggled with postpartum mental health was after adopting her son. Postpartum depression and anxiety disorders are just as common for adoptive moms as birth moms. Once a woman has experienced postpartum depression or anxiety, she is more likely to have it with future children. And that’s exactly what happened to Anna!

Anna and her husband got the shock of their life by becoming pregnant after being told it would be nearly impossible. After giving birth, Anna recognized how childbirth is much more a mother’s experience whereas adoption is something you experience with your partner.

Her second postpartum took a toll not only on her physical health but also mental health. She suffered greatly from postpartum anxiety and felt paralyzed.

When Anna became pregnant with her third child, another surprise, she knew she had to come up with a postpartum plan.

Postpartum is life changing and creating a postpartum plan can be life preserving when you suffer from postpartum mental health disorders.

Therapy and antidepressants are part of Anna’s postpartum anxiety stories. While having a plan helped, Anna still struggled greatly after giving birth to her daughter.

Anna’s postpartum experiences inspired her to provide a platform to allow other moms to share their postpartum stories. The Post Party Podcast supports countless moms with the motto, “Motherhood is too hard to do it alone.”

Be sure to listen to Anna’s postpartum anxiety stories via episode 25 of the Plus Mommy Podcast below. She also openly shares her journey to accepting her body as she is a plus size mom.

Anna Hithersay is a wife and mom of three and lives near where she grew up in Dallas, TX. She traded in the life of an academic librarian to stay home and teach her kids. When she’s not homeschooling or podcasting you can find her snuggled up with a book and a beverage, preferably Dr. Pepper, whiskey, or coffee (in that order).
